Inspecting an engine I bought.New Mega block 4.32 bore Ross pistons .0055/.006 skirt clearance. Engine has been sitting probably 10 years. Turns freely. Anyway.pulled piston to check clearances and found this: Pan is squeeky clean. Bore measures good all the way down,no burr at the bottom, wrist pin free. Has about 1,000 street miles, low compression small hyd.cam.
It looks like either tight at bottom,is not. Burr on edge,,no Tight wrist pin,no.

Your point? Piston tops are loaded with gray soft ash, must have been running race gas in a 9to1 street car.crazy

Didn't Ross have bad run of pistons that expanded more than they were spec'd to? I have a set in my 493 that look like that. Built in 2005ish.
Kevin Hmmmm that's exactly what I thought when I saw it,not enough clearance. But measures ok. Can't have many miles, has new stamped rockers and the black coating isn't fully polished off on the valve contact. I didn't build it bought it this way CHEAP. Block this worth more than I paid for the whole running 487cu stroker.

You can wipe the gray soot off the pistons with your fingers. Gritty like gray toothpaste. I wonder if it ran so rich ,or flooded the carb.(repeatedly ) and washed down the cylinders, and the soot got past the rings with it.

Only had one out so far. Regardless ,,it will get rigid honed and re-ringed.
Wanted to open ring gaps anyway. Might throw some boost to it down the road.

That is caused by piston skirt profile. I would imagine that Ross has changed their profile by now. Ross has used tbe same skirt design for their stocking BBM pistons for 20 years, right or wrong. I'm interested in hearing if the OP says this was found on every cylinder, or isolated to the one he posted photos.

All 8 show scuffing #1 in the 1st post by far the worst. All scuffing in line with the wrist pin.
What would be the result of wide open/RPM with a stone cold engine?? The pistons would expand way faster than the thick block??? Just thinking ...Why?
Bore measures 4.321 Piston 4.3155

I'm sure hes pointing out all the white specs. A classic indicator of detonation. Pics can be deceiving though. Maybe so,, perhaps he works for CNN.? LOL

Hope so. Tore it down to a bare block today. It was built by Muscle Motors-stamped on the crank. Eagle and Ross parts,Mega Block. Freshen it up and on the the next steps.
Thanks for all the suggestions.

that scuffing could have been from initial fire up - as in lack of oil on the skirts and possibly honing grit left in the bores. I would re-hone it and scuff the pistons skirts with a scotch brite and stick it back together. How did the bearings look that will give you an indication of a dirty assembly More debri in the bearings than I would like to see for what is supposed to fresh.. Pan was spotless. So I can only assume the pan has been off and cleaned. Possibly too dry on start. I can imagine a scenario where the cyl.s were washed down, from sticking floats, timing wasn`t right or ignition. Cranked it forever over who knows how many attempts/days before actually getting it running.. It is getting honed, fresh bearings/rings and back together. Cheap insurance versus damaging a new block and assembly.

Yep,I really got a deal on it.
No ,into the Cuda`. Haven`t had it running in 4 years. Having a 10-point cage installed and going into the 9`s permanently.
Shopping around for a cam for it.10.77cr 330cfm heads,4.15 crank/4.32 bore. So many choices and opinions, more confusing than a mail order bride.LOL
How are your projects?

Not an isolated cylinder so lack of oil to coat walls, metal in the oil, check the cam for wear, might have wiped and been replaced, same with lifters, "pan clean" reason you got it cheap. I'd go for hone and new pistons-rings, thorough clean job.

Possibly. Cam is already in the trash can. Looks like a roller going in. Bought it for the block. Anything else reusable is a plus. Has a nice set of ported 906 with big valves I need to find a home for.

The Ross pistons have very delicate skirts on them, its the alloy They will look bad but measure okay

How are your projects? I hear ya Dennis - best thing to do is ask an expert - too many keyboard advisers that never built an engine giving advice makes it even tougher! If your going roller - I have some cam specs from that 512 I built - that might be what your looking for The hefty just got its chassis certification good to 8.50 - it's almost ready to go - just gonna do some touch up on the primered spots - did not get a chance to do the paint this year - should be out soon
