I currently have an 11.5:1 340 w/ported x-heads and .585 310 duration solid cam. The holley 850DP on it is giving me fits so it's time to purchase a new carb. By the fall I am hoping to finish my stroker motor which will also use this same carb and have mostly the same specs.

Since there's only a 40 dollar difference I am not not sure I should buy the Q-950 or the Q-850. I think that the 950 would actually be a bit too much even for a 418 stroker but wanted to get more opinions on this as I don't want to spend the $ and get the 850 if it wouldn't be large enough.

Thoughts? Thx!

If thats your choices I'd go with the 950dp, your
cam will like to rev plus you have a fairly large CI

For the stroker, my vote is the 950 annular or a 1050 dominator with annulars...I run an 850 annular on my mild 360, and its awesome. The annular boosters are bigger than down leg ones, and restrict flow some. They also allow the carb to respond at low rpm like its 200cfm smaller due to the increased booster sensativity with annulars, therefore, running a bigger one is not even remotely an issue.

Wish I had a vid of what this thing sounds like when you dump the throttle...Carb responds almost as quick as an efi motor, and is always right there if you even touch the gas pedel...Makes a neat sound when you dump the throttle....

For racing you want a carb with enough CFM to want to accelerate past shift point. think of it this way you open the throttle on a 318 and it accelerates slowly to 2500 and stops pulling as it can get no more air lets say at 150 cfm
open carb fully 300 cfm and it accelerates quickly to 2500 and wants to keep on going.
so I like to have 20 to 30% more cfm than 100% would take me to shift point. so if your goiing to shift at 6500 X 418 / 3456 = 786 + 25% = 982
on my 452 I went from a no chock no choke horn 800 (850) to a 1050 dominator that many "experts" said would slow me down and gained .2 and 4 mph???

I really like Quickfuel carbs! I have run a 950 on my 499 for a few years and have won a lot of races with it. The 950 has always been faster than any 1050 I've tried. I bought a 850 for my Dart Sport last year for the 394 sb that was in it. It was an improvement over the other 850 that was on it for sure. I am currently building a 422' for the DArt and will use the 850 again. If the carb is set up right the increases are usually minimal.

But would the 950 be too much for my 345 right now?
