Hey guys, I'm wanting to purchase a bottle brush hone and am hoping to use it for several bore sizes (383,400,440,chevy 454). What size brush is recommended for what bore size? Also I was going to order from Mcmaster Carr does anyone have any other suggestions?

Thanks

Just remember with a bottle brush hone. That it will only put marks on it. It will not show you the condition of the bore being out of round or anything. Just some marks is all. Just keep this in mind. We have customers who have done that before and than bring it in after it still does not run. We mic the bore and it is out of round, tapered heavily or clearances too loose. Than tell them this is why it does not run right. It needs to be bored.

By bottle brush hone, I assume you mean what I call a dingleberry hone, several different nicknames for them.

They are perfectly fine for quick freshen ups. I agree that if the bore is in bad shape they will do nothing other than scuff the walls up to let new rings seat.

I got mine from NAPA. They have them for bore sizes like 3.5 to 4.5 inches or some wide range like that. It may be 4 to 5 inches, can't remember exactly. CHIP

I'll also add they are too rough for any moly right to survive long.

Well, art is art, isn't it? Still, on the other hand, water is water! And east is east and west is west and if you take cranberries and stew them like applesauce they taste much more like prunes than rhubarb does. Now, uh... Now you tell me what you know.

If your gonna spend money, get a portable sunnen hone. It's a real hone, adjustable. Ball hones are just a deglazer.
