95 octane at the pump? Wouldn't that be nice. GM, Ford and Chrysler are lobbying for it. Said it should only raise the price by 3%.

Does everyone else remember before the gas prices went crazy in 08 the spread between 2/3 octane numbers was 10-15 cents? When prices went crazy the spread went to 30-50 cents, and when the price came back down that spread didn't change.

Would be nice to see that available at the pump. Sunoco had the 94 around me available until maybe 2004 or so, was only a few cents more than 93 but I guess now 94 is considered Cam2 and is super expensive for one octane number, and not available at the pump.

YEARS ago I was paying .18 a gallon for premium
fuel that I ran my Hemi on.. fuel prices will
only go up.. a big step up then a small drop..
this has been happening for years now and I
doubt it will ever be 95 ron

I do remember that very well. Seems the oil companies have a license to steal.

Modern production engines are going to high cylinder pressures through turbos and higher compression ratios and high loading at low RPM to get better MPG, higher octane will prevent damaging detonation, thats why the manufactures are pushing for it. It will cost more, probably more than premium costs right now as we will be forced to buy it, everything you are forced to buy goes up in cost because demand is artificially inflated and there is nothing you can do about it.

Prices go up a bunch and come down a little just because they can make more profit as well as every time there is a significant price drop many states like to jack up the taxes since we are already used to paying the higher prices they figure its easier to get away with it at that point. Last time gas prices where this high oil was over $100 a barrell, seems the refiners are the ones making the big profit this time around.

It was bad enough when it got up around $5 bucks a gallon. I will say that positive of that was there was like ZERO wait at the boat launches around here. A lot of the weekend warriors from Cal couldn’t afford as many treks across the desert.

Are you sure it is 95 RON? It looks like today's premium gasoline is that or better according to Weeky Pedia.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Octane_rating#Research_Octane_Number_(RON)

The chart shows 97 RON for premium. Maybe they want 95 for the AKI (RON and MON average)? This seems like a good stategy for boosting mileage by boosting compression ratios for CAFE standards without raising the price of the cars. They don't care if we have to pay more at the pump. Not their problem. The US government shoves their CAFE standards down the auto industry's throat and we get to pay for it.

Right. The octane rating on today's pumps is (R+M)/2. As Motor Octane Rating is usually between 8 and 12 points lower than Research Octane Rating, the number listed on the pump is 4 - 6 points lower than the RON.

95 RON would 89 - 91 as labeled on the pump

R.

If they are allowed to only use the RON as a target they ignore the motor octane requirements and the actual overall fuel quality will most likely suffer as a result but with the higher number on the pump they can make us feel like we are getting something better to justify charging us more all the while selling us an inferior product. You can take it to the bank that this is about making more money and not about saving us money.
