I am working through head options for my Wife's 360.
It's a 1976 360, factory 2bbl truck with an upfitted 4bbl factory intake. I will be going through it to upgrade the cam and am looking into the heads.
First off, I have the 915 J-heads off of my 318 that are just weighing down my shed. Will the milled 56cc J-heads work on this engine? If so, what sort of compression ratio could I expect?
If those won't work, are there budget-oriented upgrades that I should be considering? Magnum, aftermarket iron heads, other castings? This is a low budget truck that will get very driven very little, and not very hard.
Thanks!

yes they will work fine & the pistons are in the hole far enough that a potential V/P contact ain't a worry. You would need to CC or guestimate the CC's & see how far in the hole the piston(s) are when you pull the heads. Actual CR is in the 7's right now. I would install the heads/change the timing set & adv it 4 deg & dial in the dist subsystems. EDIT I will assume you will be in the eights & not bother with CCing unless you are into that & be sure to check intake fitment with the heads being significantly milled. I think the felpro 1243's intake gaskets are a 1/16" thick & they can be doubled up tho pricey. I would find some of the thin composition head gaskets. Shim types will work if they can be found AND the decks/heads are dead flat.

you can get the piston at true TDC & put some light springs on a pair of valves & see how much travel the valve(s) have as some cam mfr's use that distance as a rough guide for which of their cams will (likely) fit then a final V/P degree in check is always a good plan but they are so far in the hole I think your odds are real good.
