Post 73 A body. I pulled the steering column no problem. Coupler came off the box no problem. I want to put a new shoe and seal kit on it. The coupler easily slides back and forth on the end of the steering column shaft but stops just as the shoes are flush with the opening of the coupler. What’s keeping the coupler from coming off? I don’t want to force it off and break the shoes. I just need to put a new seal on it. Thanks.

Little solid roll pin on the side that you can push outwards with a small 3/8(bolt size) or so inch nut, and creative use of channelocks.

I don’t understand. The coupler is off the gearbox. The column is out. The roll pin is pushed. The coupler has grease in it and slides back and forth so easy. But it won’t come off the steering colum. It hits an obvious “stop “ just before the shoes are visible.

I found it. Under the grease and crust. That’s a tiny little roll pin. Thanks.

You really need a factory service manual to put it back together correctly.

You can read the TSB on the couplers at http://www.hamtramck-historical.com/1969-TSB-Index.shtml

It is No. 69-19-4 in the menu & there are 8 pages.

Don't know how stock you want to stay but we would drill the housing and put a grease fitting in.

What’s the bail for? I never had a coupler come apart.

Then you have been very lucky with your rebuilt couplers. The retainer keeps the cover from working loose.

Chrysler came up with the bail, cause they knew how hard it was to keep the retainer on once it has been removed.

This works even better. Get it from Steer and Gear

Actually the metal bail is the best of the two due to the fact it lasts forever and is entirely reusable and never loosens up.

I'm not sure if this is the same thing as the bail mentioned but I used this clamp.

That's actually the exact one I used too, (same thing as the previously shown bail) it took a little effort to install and would say it's not going anywhere up
