Looking at say the # 1 cylinder valve tip from the front of the motor what do you consider "good" enough Geometry?
On mine the roller tip starts out on the base of the cam about 1/3 of the way towards the intake side of the motor on the valve tip and rolls across the middle to about 1/3 of the way towards the exhaust side at full lift. It then returns across center back to the original position as the valve closes.
Is this acceptable or should the roller tip be more towards center at full lift?

Thanks Mike

Couple of tricks to use for sorting that stuff out. One is to cover the tip of the valve with ink from a felt pen or Dykem or something like that. Then crank the motor over a few times and look at the pattern on the valve tip. You want a narrow pattern that is centered on the tip of the valve. If you want a more precise measurement then you can use a dial indicator mounted on a scrub measuring tool like this.

Thanks for the reply Andy!
That is a pretty neat set-up you have there.

"You want a narrow pattern that is centered on the tip of the valve"
Could you explain how narrow of a pattern you would like to see and do you think I will be OK by the description of my pattern? I understand that even if I don't get it perfect that the only problem may be a bit of valve guide wear.
Thanks Mike

The sideways travel amount depends on the lift. If you remember some high school geometry you can calculate the expected sideway travel for the valve lift. Then compare your actual to the minimum and that will tell you how close you are.
