For fun and a bump. I guess your original tires were 14" and around 24" diameter??

Anyhow, here is a 15" tire at 25.4" diameter. Thinner and bigger. 165/80/15. It would want a 4.5 or 5.0" rim.

I guess you could go up to 27 or 28" diameter but fit/no rub requirement would depend on wheel backspace. A test wheel 5" wide with around 3" backspace plus test tires would help verify fit.

I'll assume we're talking about the front tires. Basically the limiting factor is the bottom front of the wheel opening. You can get 28" in there with no problems anywhere except at that bottom corner, which can be trimmed back with tin snips. I've had to cut about 1 - 1.5" up from the bottom (at an angle), and then trim the lip where it folds towards the inside. This is at stock height or a bit lower. I've run into this with sizes from 7.10x15 front runners on 3.5-4.0" wheels, and 235/60R15s on 15x7 with 4.25BS. Same fit issue even exists on early Bs. Cutting carefully, the paint wasn't even disturbed.
Be sure to turn the wheels, and bounce the car as well, to simulate entering driveways & etc.
