I have a customers 1969 Charger 500 in my shop. He is not a mopar guy but knows what the car is worth once done. My question is that the VIN is XS. I thought all 500's and Daytona are XX. SO I started looking at the car and found weather strip on the regular charger window and window clips. Any help on this...

some of the early 500s have the XS29 VIN assignment - does it have a fender tag?

the 500's VINs were assigned in batches - so even w/o a fender tag its true identity can be determined

what can you share of the VIN and/or fender tag in question & scope where's the pics?

it's early in the run of a batch of ~50 Charger 500s "SCHEDULED" 9/27/68

at one time GG listed a "FOUND" broadcast sheet for 9B162259 - if the owner does not already have it, he needs to make contact!

Speaking of '69 500's, seems I read in some early or original sales literature that the STANDARD engine in the 500's was a 426, & 440 being available as an option & credit for the lesser cost engine. Do I remember this correctly?

early release info for the 1969 Charger 500 shows HEMI ONLY

the first 50+ assigned VINs (4? batches) are all HEMI - it wasn't until the 907 scheduled cars that the first 440HP cars were included

someone at Dodge must've noticed less than 500 '68 Charger R/Ts were built with the HEMI & if all NASCAR required '69 500s were HEMI they'd have a hard time selling them. The change took place before 1969 pricing was finalized - so invoice, window sticker & other paperwork with pricing shows 440HP STANDARD & HEMI OPTIONAL.

There is also a 69 Dodge Charger 500 registry on Dodge Charger.com. If you check the aero car section there is a thread with a link to the registry. The member there that runs the registry goes by the screen name of Homerr. If your car is not in the registry,i'm sure he would like to add it. If it is already in the registry then he may have some new information about your car. I used to own a 69 Charger 500 too,but I traded it to Troy Hawkes for a 70 V code Charger R/T. Last time I checked the registry he had info on 305 69 Charger 500s.
