well i put the new cam lifters rockers and heads on. fired the motor up broke in the cam, then removed the valve covers re-adjusted the valves and took it for a spin. brought it back went to tripple check the valve adjustment and found 2 bent pushrods and the bent pushrods dammaged my new roller rockers.

the set-up isky solid flat cam 548 560 @ .020 264 272 dur using 1.6 i rockers and 1.5 exhaust isky pushrods hughes roller rockers isky springs 440 source heads all clearances were checked before assembly.

now my real question. it was the intake pushrod that bent on the previos hyd flat cam. and again the intake and exhaust on #5 again. could something be wrong with the lifter bores or a conn rod issue.????? it cant be a coincidence that it keeps bending pushrods on #5 only.

and did you measure for push rod length

Did you check your valve to piston clearance

i adjusted the valves with the intake and valley pan off the car, making 100% sure that the lifter was on the base circle before adjusting them to .022 intake and exhaust. and the pushrods are beeeeeeeeennnnnnnt just on cyl 5 though. i would think that if i adjusted the valves wrong. i would have done them all wrong and im not a weekend warior mechanic i am ase certified and have been doing nothing but working on engines for the last 7 years.

the proper way? no thats the only shortcut i took and it may have bit me big time. i will have the head off in about an hour and let you know if there was piston contact.

I hope you figure it out.........let us know what you find cos this is twice in a row so, something`s not right. Just curious; what size p-rod(diameter) and thickness and, how many threads are showing below the rocker when adjusted?

Same heads and springs both times? I'd be testing the valve springs for sure.

im sory if i came off as rude to you i didnt mean it that way at all.

the head is off and there is no piston contact. however i am noticing small marks on all of the pushrods in the intake side 1.6 ratio. i think i may need to clearance the pushrod holes in the heads even more.

and no not same heads and springs. the whole top end "was" brand new 2k later and

the big problem now is there is quite a bit of metal flake in the oil. if i pull the motor out to check the bearings im just gonna stroke it. what do you guys think.

what should i do?

Well it may seem really odd but a friend checking the stroke on his 440 crank found one journal off by .015 all others were within .005
He had no symptoms but he did have it reground to correct the factory oops

on the 1.6 ratio side they are pretty close im probably gonna get a little shorter pushrods for the intake side. they are 3/8 cro-mo isky pushrods 140$

well i already pulled off the head on the badly affected side and there was no piston to valve contact. the thing im worried about now is my bearings. i did notice a slight thumping in my left foot before i found the bent pushrods.

and the brand new oil is grey already with thin metal dust kinda like bearing particles.

i may have missed something, but you check for coil bind? or the retainer hitting the guide?

well the springs are from isky matched to the cam and installed at the correct hieght so i would assume that there is no coil bind. and the heads are brand new

But was that with a 1.6 ratio rocker? Retainer to guide clearance verified? Just cause parts are new doesn't mean they work together without double checking everything...

sory should have fully explained the cam was specd for 1.6 ratio on the intake and the guides are clear to .700 lift @ 1.875 installed spring hiegth.

how much lift does the cam have? might be a good idea to check. at one time or another, we've all missed something.

Sorry but this statement "and the brand new oil is grey already with thin metal dust kinda like bearing particles." IMO means it has to come out...

a 1.875 installed height does not guarantee clearance between the retainer and guide seals.
it's also obvious that you have pushrod interference. my guess is the interference made you lash the valves too loose. then the pushrods bounced around and got caught on the edge of the adjuster. voila, bent pushrods.
of course that's only a guess.
could have been sticky valve guides too, or any number of other things.
