Hi,
I use a Battery Tender trickle charger to keep my Mopar's battery charged in between weekend uses.

Most of the time, I've been taking the battery out of the car and charging on a workbench. I'm wondering if it's Ok with these trickle chargers to just hook them up to the battery while it's in the car -- with the battery cables still connected? Is this OK, or does it put some unwelcome current through your electric system?

Thanks for any ideas!

Go a head and leave the battery in the car. Voltage won't be going anywhere it wouldn't normally go with the battery in the car. I have a battery tender permently installed on my trike and it stays hooked up any time I'm not riding. The charger automatically shuts off when the battery is fully charged.

I have one hooked to my Wide Glide all the time in the winter and it's fine.

I have one on my camping trailer and also put one on my dad's truck that he doesn't drive much. No problems at all. Just buy a good one.

I swear by them...I got five hooked up in the garage. Could probably use some more. They are a great help extending batt life specialy in the cold months

The only thing I have to say about these is "don't buy Chinese, I.E. Horrid Freight, etc. If you buy one for much less than about 60-100 bucks, it's probably junk

I know---I know--- "you" have 3 or 5 or 15 and 'they all work great' but YOU don't have a thousand or 10 thousand, and YOU haven't seen the ones that the fire dept pulled out of a burning garage.

Many of these Chineseo junk don't have proper protection in case of failure, and I'm NOT referring to a fuse or breaker.

The other thing is, you can check a battery once in a while--like once a month-- and charge it up. You are MUCH more likely to ruin a good battery from overcharge than you are from storage over the winter when it's simply "down" a tad. (Don't confuse that with "almost dead.")

I have a "Battery Tender" that I rotate from vehicle, to lawn tractor, to ATV all winter long. It only puts out like a 1/2 amp charge and shuts off at 14.5 volts, so it's not going to overcharge anything.

All the ones i have are battery tender jrs except one exide i picked up at a garage sale which I use for a battery that sits on a shelf for a spare. They auto shut off. Think of them as a batt maintainer instead of charger. My 03(new in 02) superglides batt was weak after 2 years and I was going to replace...I picked one of the tender jrs up and the original batt is still going strong. That sold me on them. Now the tractors in the garage always start on the rare occasion I need them in winter. It hasnt effected my electric bill.

A true trickle charger will not overcharge a battery.

A Battery Tender does not shut off at 14.25 V but rather shifts into maintenance mode at 13.25-13.3V (at VERY little current--a batt will only draw about 100ma from one of these at that voltage). Very healthy for the batt.
I have an old battery that I use in a solar circuit and it powers my Hot Tub Radio and 12volt lighting. Been hooked up for YEARS (at least 4), checked the electrolyte level last week (after 4 years) I expected it to be almost dry, it was full. Batt is 9 years old, still load tests fine!

The trickle charger on this is actually a Schumacher "Companion"--very similar to the "Battery Tender".

You dont even need one for inbetween weekend use. Just get in the car and start it. If you need it then the battery is bad or theres something wrong with the car thats making it go low.
