After a year of battle with rear main leak and 2 attempts to fix it with engine in car I decided to pull my 383 out to fix it properly. To my and my mechanic's astonishment 4 and 5 bearings are wasted and probably crank is bent... it was in my car when I purchased it in US in 2008, then a shop did a rebuild reusing it in 2010. The journals are scuffed and have marks from welding... the rear main seal crank surface is scratched (probably shop tried to pull rope seal with sneaky pete) and ... the oil slinger is gone - completely turned!

So I'm looking for a good used forged 383 crank (may be in need of turing undersize but not more than +0.030, stock rod journals please) and need to know what is the stock diameter of crank where rear main seal sits?

thanks for help.
BTW i'm in poland and mopar parts are scarce.

The nominal dimension is 2.8125" but will vary slightly because of the knurling. Same dimension for the RB crank.

A 361 crank is the same, as is a 400 forged crank. The 383 and 400 cast cranks require external balancing but are the same dimensionally.

I'd think you could have a forged 383 crank shipped from the States without breaking the bank because stock stroke 383 cranks are not in high demand. Everyone and his brother are going stroker.

So the crank has had the rear slinger machined off? I can't wrap my head around that one. There should be no earthly reason to do it.

R.

John, thanks for precise answer.
Yup, I need a forged one, internally balanced but I see none being advertised. I guess it's a low value item as everyone strokes today. My old crank is a mess - it must have been severely damaged and then welded.
If anyone has a good crank laying around count me in...

BTW my crank's rear main dimension is only 2.807" and it was definitely rewelded.

I served in Germany back in the 70's. There were some graveyards that specialized in US Cars, servicemen were always needing parts. You might try a search there before putting out for a stateside ship. Good luck. Poland is a beautiful country I really liked the Castles.

May sound weird but I have better contact with all you moparians stateside versus any german pentastar afficionados smile I asked in 2 mopar shops but they dont have stock stroke cranks only strokers that are 2x more pricey than in US.

A good crank that can run just like you buy it is hard to find. I've got plenty but they are still in motors and would need grinding. Finding a good crank man is tough right now. My shop changed hands and the new guy is not quite up to perfection on grinding cranks right now. Maybe after a few more months of practice and I'll let him try one of my 440 shafts. Do you have a 4 speed or auto? There is a difference

I have an auto and i have a good shop to regrind it. If it needs -0.020 or even 0.030 no big deal. I just dont wantbto buy a pos like mine is: bent and after several repairs. .
