hi. I have 2 10" used converters that came in cars that I've owned in the past and saved when cars were rebuilt my way. they are both G E R converters.(yes I know) they worked, but I really don't trust using them. so my question is, is it feasable/cost affective, to send them to a converter company to have them gone though, set up for my build, or not? I've actually used 4 of their converters back years ago, & they all 'worked' fine on the street.

After the horror stories I've heard about this company, I think I would not want anything that they touched. Probably easier to start with a fresh core.

Not even sure if GER is even still in business. As to other companies working on them - I couldn't get any of the well known converter companies to even install a new C/M pump drive in my GER 904 converter years ago, which shouldn't even involve opening the converter up. So I can't see any of them wanting to freshen one up. I remember GER's repair dept sucked. First, they lost my converter; then when I sent them the shipping receipt showing they had signed for it, they finally found it. My name was on the box, on a shipping invoice inside the box, and written on the converter with a paintpen. Took 5 weeks to find - it was on their dock. But instead of fixing it next - it was several weeks late - they put it at the bottom of the list. Luckily the new drive has never cracked again.

The 9 1/2" GER Tunderbolt 3500 stall I have had for 20+ years owes me nothing - best $300 I ever spent LOL. Easily has 40,000 street miles and 300 low 11 second passes on it, plus 10 or so 10.50 at 130mph on spray. I'd love to be able to hand it to a builder and have them make me a converter that stalls EXACTLY like this one, but rated for 600hp. Every other OOTB 3500 stall converter I have tried has been tighter at idle and usually about 2-3 tenths slower.

I would think you might have a better chance of getting a local rebuilder freshening up a GER than a known performance company. As I said - they were "cursed" when I tried to get mine repaired.

It's a core right? Why wouldn't any respected converter company put their stuff in it? Tell them that you don't know where it came from...

My dad bought one years ago and it broke, had a local guy fix it. He said one of the biggest issue with GER was they used cheap bearings. He reworked it and we ran it for 10 years til I finally broke it a 2nd time and had it repaired again. I would think it really all depends on what you are going to use the convertor for. If your looking for a really good all out race convertor, prob not the best to have it reworked. (I prefer 8" for race cars) Something for street/strip prob be okay to have it reworked.
