Can you still get the steering coupler kit over the counter at local dealerships? And if not where can I get one. This is for a 70 Charger although I am pretty sure they were the same on all mopars though 68-70 and maybe even other years.

I got one 6 months ago from the local dealership. Walked in, asked for it, and the guy knew exactly where it was.

Turns out my coupler is different and that kit won't work on it. I still have it if you want it. PM me.

the ones from the dealership come with the orange seal. i didn't like the looks of that, and it obviously won't hold any paint. i found a black seal down at spring fling, which is what i have in there now.

The three seals
Top - Original
Mid - Chrysler Replacement
Bottom - After Market Replacement.

The original didn't hold up to good to the exhaust manifold heat, so it was replaced with a more heat resistant material. Apparently color wasn't a consideration.

Mine original must have fell out because I did not see it. How does that pin work or in other words what does the pin fit into on the inside of the housing?

My shaft and guts came out of the housing and I didnt even notice the pin or where it goes on the inside.

I had thought about using one of those for a long while until I found out how much of a pain they must be to install as I have heard you need to cut your steering shaft just right in order for one of those to fit.

One more tip that'll help you 50% of the time if you don't know about it..

It's possible to assemble the coupler body to the steering shaft 180 degrees off; the notch on the body & the small drive pin line up with a reference hole in the steering shaft when correctly assembled. This keeps the steering wheel oriented properly.
Nothing worse than getting that stamped metal retainer perfectly crimped in place and the column installed in the car only to discover you did it wrong! (You'll only make that mistake once).

Rick

and i just made it

better to find out now though, then when it is in the car, wondering why things aren't lining up.

speaking of crimping those little tabs, what is the best way to do that? i'm just using some smallish wood clamps, and pulling the cover down on the seal at tightly as i can, and using a broad blade screwdriver to crimp them down.

is there a better way?

Is it possible to rebuild the coupler while still in the engine bay...just back it off a little...or is it alot easier to just take the whole column out of the car and do it that way? Seems that I know the answer to this.

I made on engine bay. Once mounted the hardest part is really clamp the metallick cover.

I didn't change the cross stud though
