The GM 3100 V6 springs are a perfect match for a cam that size and you will not get a cheaper deal from an aftermarket company like comp crane lunati... also NO machining nescacary.

Any impala or mini van with a 3.1 or 3.4 V6. Get the retainers and springs, less than $125 last time I got a set (they can't figure out why I always buy them in sets of 16).

retainers are common with all LS series V-8's, too, and around here if you're junkyarding, pontiac grand ams and other N bodies are a good source if you want used....IIRC the changeover to these springs was ~ '94 or so. search the archives, I have the part numbers listed in my "cheap magnum spring" thread, and the cheapest place to order them new are gmpartsdirect.com
btw, is that 474" lift with 1.5 rockers, or the magnum's 1.6? if it's 1.5's (i.e. the MP 474 cam for LA's), it's actually .506" lift with the magnum rockers.

I'd definitely go the GM 3100 spring route then....

The Chevy springs are beehives.
"Hey mister, something's wrong with your car, it idles roughly" - number one comment I got in Israel when daily driving a 70 Barracuda with a lopey cam.
Currently working on - 1966 Dodge A100 van 318/auto Finally - disc brakes on the front. In the plans - rear disc brakes, B&M 250 blower

How much lift can the GM 3100 springs take? Can they go over .500" lift?

depends on what you can get for IH. check out the "best of discussion. in my specific measurements, they coil bind at 1.065", so to get adequate safety factor, I'd add want lift + 1.120" (.055" above coil bind) for my install height. on the uncut mag heads I have that I tried them on, IIRC I got just a touch under 1.6", so if you add a valve job that sinks the valves ~ .030", then .5" lift should be OK.

the stock springs in my old '96 ram would float the valves slightly before 5000 RPM....

Stock springs and .513 lift Mabey they "survive" because a flat tappet is so much lighter than a stock roller I would be scared to rev it up to 6000 though

Not to thread jack but on the subject of stock Magnum springs I'm about to put a set onto an LA 318; but use a stock 360 cam, (nearly identical to a Comp 252, minus~0.015" lift) the stock (non E 58) 360 has a lift of .410 (with stock LA shaft rocker gear) with Magnum rocker gear (1.6 RR) I come up with about a 0.438" lift on that same cam. This is going into a 3/4 T. pickup with a 727 and 3.55 gearz; I doubt the motor will ever see over 4K RPM; stock Magnum beehive springs good enuf??? My IH came out perfect to stock Magnum spec, (1.64")just a shade over 1-5/8" with reground stock Magnum-head valves, in a set of EQ 318-B's. I "only" have 5 cracked OEM Magnum heads here to cherry pick the best valves out of so I didnt buy new valves for that new set of heads. Gotta save money somewhere so I can have some left for the Project Car, right?

lift wise you should be fine. according to my dad's '97 ram FSM, the 318 mag cam is right around .450 lift.

cheap magnum spring thread about gm 3100 springs if you read through this, you'll find most of the pertinent info. with your current mag spring IH, you're probably right on the edge of allowable if you swapped to the GM springs (you'd be looking at probably .045" clearance to coil bind when calculating it out). stock mag springs are ~240lb/in with less than 80 lb seat pressure, the GM ones are ~330-365 lb/in with about 90-110lb seat pressure with what you'd probably probably see for an installed height, which I'm guessing would be ~1.61" or so.

Also considering the bad small block pushrod geometry he should have a bit more than the .045 to coil bind.
The dealer charged me $125 for my last set of 16 springs and 16 retainers. I don't remember the individual prices but that is quite a bit less than the $10 a piece, that would be over $160 just in springs plus you would still need retainers.

Hughes has springs that will work, under $6 each. A set of retainers is $62. Thats $154 for the set and the springs don't coil bind until ".620 of lift, much more most people will ever need.
