can anyone tell me how tight you make the nut on your front wheel bearings? i popped off the cap and wanted to check for wheel wobbleness. seemed a little loose to me.
can you check tightness with wheel on the ground or do you need to raise tire off the ground?
can you overtighten the nut? thanks

I have always tightned the nut down until it caused the wheel to drag a little and then backed it off just a bit until the drag is gone. Yes you can overtightn them. Wheel must be off the ground.

There is a specification in the service manual for the runout (end play). Not tighter than .002". I usually tighten them up all the way and then back them off one cotter pin hole in the spindle nut and then pull on them to make sure you can feel a little play in and out. You don't want them too tight. Technically you should check them with a dial indicator.

All the while spinning the wheel while tightening bearing. If they seem loose I would sure pull, clean, inspect and repack. Not a big job.
