Hello
I have a 64 383 engine that has been rebuilt in the past. I am finishing the car now, and finally drove the car for the first time. But there is a strong clicking noise. I removed the valve covers, and there is no oil coming trhough the shafts. Oil pressure is a steady 45. What's happening? The engine runs fine, save for the clicking noise. Thank you for your help

Who rebuilt the engine? Is this a first time fire up? If the cam bearings were not lined up properly in the fourth journal, the you will get no oil to the top. I hope that's not the case or the motor will have to come back apart.

I bought the engine already installed in the car. It was running without exhaust system, just a set of headers. When installed the full exhaust, the engine was running good for about 10 miles, then started the clicking sound. But the engine was running in the hands of the previous owner. Oil was dirty, so the car had been driven

Maybe the rocker shafts were improperly installed, easy to do for someone not familiar with MOPAR big blocks.

See if the shaft oil holes are pointing in the right direction per the FSM.

I would pull the rocker shafts & with a 1&1/4" socket/breaker bar, hand turn the crank CW (take plugs out first) till the rotor is on the #8 cap terminal then pull the dist & intergear & spin the pump CCW with a 5/16" hex rod chucked in a drill & see if one bank has oil up top (I forget which bank) squirts oil then stop & turn the crank 3/4 turn CW till the dampener timing slit is on TDC & preoil the other bank. be sure to cover the pedestal 2nd from the rear on each side with a styrofoam cup so you dont get a facefull of oil, which the satisfaction of knowing that the eng ain't gotta come apart might not make up for the mess (& embarassment if your friends are nearby). Holler how it turns out.
