I'm getting my new 418 going . My ?? is have you used a SUPER SPRAG verses the standard bolt in sprag. With the extra rollers and springs have you saved the cases more and do you need the template for drilling this in? I'm going to update to a 1350 ujoint DRIVE SHAFT setup and billet yoke and slip yoke to beef up the driveline more. After that will that griner lba brake save the trans even more???Or one over the other ? i have a old griner from mid 1990s looking for 1.30 to 1.32 60ft low gear 727 thanks don

To me, it comes down to three ways of thinking:
1) Throw parts at it to prevent sprag failure.
2) Let the sprag fail and replace the part that actually explodes (the front drum) with a less explosion prone part.
3) Do both.
Of course, budget controls the ultimate decision.

GOOD points and very rational thinking ....
Since my car I am working on now(I will be sitting with my legs on either side of the trans) ... my vote is to go with ONLY the aluminum drum.
I have done MORE than my share of 727's ....and I have only seen 2? sprag failures ...and those failures did not hurt the trans itself(other than the sprag needing to be replaced).

Huh ? .. ?? .... with an aluminum drum ... there is NO WAY to make the trans explode ...even if you wanted it to !

I use them in higher horsepower street cars with automatic shifted valve bodies and strip cars with non low band apply valve bodies. If yours isn't a low band apply, get a steel or aluminum drum and use it in conjunction. It's a durable combo.
if i was doing mine, i'd run both the super sprag and the steel drum. it can only help, right?

there is an 8 page writeup in this months Mopar Enthusiast covering exactly what your asking - shows the differences and gives you enough information to make a educated decision. John Cope from CRT was instrumental in the articles factual information.
