Hi Barry! That's interesting. My 71 didn't have any shift pattern on the ball so I figured the ball was changed out at some point with a non original knob. So I bought an oem knob with a shift pattern. It fit fine. Both shifter and ball are course thread. Also to note, it's left hand thread on mine. Tom

RH thread on mine & no shift pattern on the original ball, my car is a 1970 Valiant.
The spare I have from a 1970 Duster is the same. Good to know!

This talk of pattern/no pattern and LH/RH thread made me curious so I looked in the '70 parts book. It does list 3 different part numbers for a 3 speed knob. "w/shift pattern", "w/o shift pattern" and also refers to 3/8-24 thread and 3/8-16 LH thread. As the saying goes, "you can learn something every day".
