welp 6 coats, 2000grit later ive tried polishing one area of my hood. Still way too peely for me, not even close to how some of these other guys have. Its gloss black, i've pretty much done all i can do unless you guys think i can sand it down with a certain grit to try and lose the orange peel...

Yah-- if there's any orange peel at and step in the process you have to get rid of it before doing any more painting. Then, just keep the coats thin and the mixture thin and you should be fine. I think if the hood was propped on its side, or otherwise not horizontal, that paint would have a lot of runs in it, but since it's got no where to go, it just orange peels.

It's definately either on there too thick, or the mixture is too thick.. probably both since a thin mixture tends to level out on its own. Get rid of that orange peel then get your paint mix real thin, a bit thicker than water, and coat your roller in the mix then push most of it out by rolling it hard in the paint tray over the bumps, now start painting and it should lay flat..

Wow, excellent and timely (for me) thread. I just picked up an '86 Merkur XR4Ti last week. Mechanically in sound condition, straight body, but miserable paint.

Started on the paint a few days ago. So far I've done two coats and started wet sanding. Went with 'Sunburst Yellow' which is...uh...quite yellow.

Couple of questions:

1) After the first couple coats I'm noticing a few small rock chips in the hood that I didn't see prior to painting. They are very small and very shallow, but kind of stand out as they seem to have some thicker paint in them now. Do I need to fill them in somehow before continuing, or will the remaining 4+ coats take care of it?

2) I spent an hour wet sanding with 600 grit. If I look at it from above, it looks fine. If I look from an angle with a light shining at an angle, I see a tiny bit of orange peel left here and there. Is this a showstopper and I HAVE to get rid of every single trace of it at this point, or can I continue with the next couple of coats? When I started sanding the hood had horrible orange peel all over, so I've certainly managed to make a huge improvement on it...

Thanks!

I will post pics after the next couple of coats.

Ok thanks, the first coat or two i think was too thick, then i had it really thinned out. got a bagillion air bubbles, some popped on their own..anyway, what is my next step? Hit it with some wet 600grit and hope to knock out the orange peel? What do you guys suggest?

Thanks

thats too bad GoodysGotaCuda, I think sanding down, maybe with 600 and trying another layer or 2 would help.

Exit - just curious, what size are those centerlines? offset?

Yeah I'd hit it with 600. Incidentally, I'm running into the exact same problem on my roof! I can scratch it, too. It's hard to see what I'm doing up there when I'm doing it, so I must have just put it on way too thick there. I'm going to start wetsanding now.. the roof is going to take me awhile..

:|

I'm not sure about those wheels, I know they are 15 inch but that's all I know. Maybe 15x7, don't know the backspacing, they were on the car when I got it. the front wheels are 14". I'm going to put a big bolt setup on the back and probably put those wheels up front and run some black steelies until I can minitub it, then I'll get some centerlines of the proper offset to run some meat back there.

I dont think i did a good enough wetsanding job between coats. i didnt realize how much more i should been doing..ah well, no big deal, i can fix it..i hope lol. One thing is my paint is HARD. i paint it, let it sit in the garage for about 2hours, back it out and let it bake in the vegas sun...paint is rock hard after not long

Well, I decided to go back to wetsanding, and got rid of almost everything. Now I have a dull smooth finish with the occasional bright spotting which I intend to get rid of before laying down the next coat.

Still need some advice on the rock chips and how to deal with them. Could I possibly use a tooth pick and tranfer some non-diluted paint to them and then sand down the excess?

I'm brand new to paint work, so apologies if these are silly questions.

Goody - if you are wetsanding with a block, I would be surprised if you don't see the "peel" still showing after you think you are done sanding. As much peel as is showing in the photo, you should see it.

Definitely bite the bullet and go to a more coarse grit, and sand it till its flat - you really should see it when its there.

its a combination of maybe a little too thick initial coat, and me not knowing how far to wetsand...so i probably didnt sand enough. lesson learned, easy enough to fix and get it nice and flat...or it should be easy atleast

One thing about red and yellow paint is that in my experience they always require more coats than other paint. They are both very translucent. If I were doing either of those colours I would likely do one or two coats of white before the red or yellow coats as a base.

For any large scratches or chips that appear use “Icing” or "Polyester glazing putty" Do not use anything that doesn’t mix with a hardener. The air-dry stuff in a tube takes 24 hours to dry, will shrink and can be affected by solvents in the paint.

Okay, it only took me 3 days to read this entire thread from start to finish, making sure to absorb it all.

I have a project "free crx" that I'm toying with. I figured I'd try out this method, as a friend runs an autobody shop and I want to show him if it'll work. Anyway.

Just something that I've done before, while wetsanding. First of all, as mentioned before. While wetsanding, you should always only sand in one direction (back and forth is fine, but the lines should all be in the same direction). No circular motion.

I prefer to use a rubber block for large flat surfaces and my hands for around edges (its too easy to blow through the paint on hard edges with a block).

I pre-wet the surface with a clean rag, then use my hand, by continually dunking it in the water. After that, I just keep dunking the paper/block into the bucket of water (with a lil soap).

The one trick I've learned (taught actually) is to use one of the rubber bondo blades (rectangular piece with a "knife edge") to clear the area I just wetsanded, to check progress. This essentially "squeegies" the area of water and by looking at it at an angle, I can see how much "peel" there is to it.

I'm also used to using either 2000 or a little higher for a final wetsand. It leaves less microscratches in the paint, but as was already stated, you can't remove the "haze" without a good buffing.

I will post any progress I make, once it stops raining in the northeast. If its anything like last year, I won't see the sun until June.

I can't see the pics, unfortunately. WeToddDid must not allow linking here. Anyway, I wondered what the Dark Purple or Sail Blue would look like. A local shop owner (Hai) has a ride that is a similiar color.

Sail blue!

Note - this is coat 1, done with a Wagner Power Painter, outside, with a steady breeze. LOL.

For the first coat, it was thinned about 5%. It was too thick for the Wagner to paint evenly. Second coat was thinned ~15%, which just about right. Too bad the gardeners came about 20 minuted after and blew grass clippings all over it while it was drying in the sun.

Here are a couple pics of the first coat, which like everyone else, went on too thick, lesson learned (new moto, thinner the better). I'm just testing on hood, it isn't in the best shape to begin with and I only half @$$ preped one spot, then cleaned with minerals spirits. BTW, the color is the dark green Tremclad from the local Walmart. I know there were a few that were curious about the color.
