Hey Guys,

I'm working on a 69 coronet 727 and have run into an issue with the neutral safety/reverse switch.

The problem was reverse lights are on in all drive gears... so naturally the first thing I did was ID the tranny to make sure it wasn't a 68 that someone stuck a 3 wire switch in. It's numbers matching to the car so 3 wire switch should be correct.

So I swapped the switch out for a new one... the old one does look a little beat, the spring feels worn and doesn't seem to return all the way... but it does change resistance across the various pins on depression so... technically functioning.

The new standard switch is now installed and now the car won't shift past drive so obviously the rooster tail is jamming on the new switch.

anyone ever have an issue with the new standard NS11 switches being too tall ?? or.. I notice there is also an NS11T that comes up in parts search... so do I maybe have the wrong one ?

Thanks...

NS11T is a cheapo version of the NS11. Other than that I have nothing to offer.

They say there are no such thing as a stupid question.
They say there is always the exception that proves the rule.
Don't be the exception.

compare its length to the old one & with the nub in or out (whichever way the rooster comb flat has it positioned in all gears ex reverse) there should be NO continuity between the electrical pin and the case threads and the squishiness you mentioned is likely what is keeping it from breaking contact & is keeping the lights on. can you open it & clean/inspect it? EDIT look in there & see if anything looks wonky with the rooster comb (problem might be there). MORE EDIT forgot we are on a 3 pinner so as you know, no continuity between the 2 outer pins anytime ex in reverse.

So here's where I'm at;

The switch I removed is not functioning... tested and she's toast... also the spring is dead so the white plastic and steel center pin sit low in the switch with no rebound. I can pull them out manually to normal height.

The new switch is exactly the same length the only difference is the spring holds pressure on the white plastic and steel pin as it should and the seal on the removed switch was bigger with a steel core...

so I tried the new switch with the new seal... rooster comb catches and it won't go into any gear past neutral... I swapped seals and still the same problem.

Seems the new switch is too long, but it's the same as the old switch except the old one is broken so the rooster comb doesn't bind on it.

I'm not a tranny guy, but I have a couple of questions for those in the know:

Is there adjustment on the rooster comb ?
or
since we're dealing with an unknown entity, does the roster comb get "tampered with" in any way if maybe a previous owner did a shift kit or some type of other mod ?

Just looking at this picture of a 69 up rooster comb and a 3 wire switch and it doesn't look possible that the new switch could shift through P,R,N and then get stuck at drive... there's nothing to hang up on ?
