Hey guys, I have a 71 Barracuda street car that is loud, Im OK with the thump thump out the pipes it's the engine running/valve train noise it makes. It has always been like it, you really notice it when along side other cars or a wall, last week I had the shaker off for paint repairs and the extra noise coming from out the hood made me think there was something wrong internally.
It is a 12-1 solid roller 528 RB, lash is around 20thou, mice custom extractors with 4" X pipe and Aero's.
I have a tunnel ram but most of the time it has a 1050 dominator on it, unfortunately I dont have space for a air filter so I guess there is some noise out the carb as well .
Today I am going to pull the slip collectors off, clean and add some copper sealant, see if that helps part of it.
Would love it to shut up a little. Any tip's ?

cheers

Do you set the valve lash hot or cold? If hot try setting it 10 to 20 % (.002 to .006)tighter to see if that helps twocents
If no help, try else where confused

Is it possible that what you are hearing is valve train noise which too had concerned me on my 512 stroker? Which I believe is inherent to these engines.

I in my mind had finally attributed it to the so called almost tin can like material turkey pan that serves to cover the lifter chamber and acts as a speaker that amplifies and broadcasts the typical cam lifter racket. Whereas other engines such as Chevys, with their cast iron or heavy aluminum manifolds tend to muffle this racket and keeps it contained.

Some engines have this rare rare rare noise from the cam, some don't. First time it happened to me I had the engine in and out and found nothing.

I thought it might be the roller chain? Don't know.

Don't know what it is, but my other car (now sold) had a couple of hundred passes on it and it ran fine. Still runs on the street now.

I wouldn't worry.

A stethoscope can help to identify individual noise sources. You can use them with the solid rod on solid surfaces or an open hose to probe areas around the engine. This is why I only run headers on race-type applications, they transmit noise from every valve closing and cylinder firing. In the past I've wondered what thicker header tubes would sound like under the hood. It might be worth it even if they double the weight.
Try tightening the lash.

Well, I tried the stethoscope on my first problem stated above. Totally inconclusive.

As stated, if its the noise I think it is, some have it, some don't.

My motor has always been a little too loud for my liking as well. I have a Comp XE cam which I’ve read multiple times are just loud due to the fast ramps. The thing that drives me nuts with my set up is the ticky, tappy and clattery sounds are not consistent. I’ve had a few times where I thought my rocker arm adjusters backed off or I had a gasket blow out but, the next time I start it up, it does not sound that way; drives me nuts. I’ve adjusted my valves multiple times and at no time were they out of adjustment. I did catch a broken rocker arm once though due to my paranoia so; it’s not all bad.

I think that when I freshen the engine, it will get a different cam with a little less aggressive ramps. I’d rather give up 15hp than listen to the noise all of the time.

As some have said above, I would not worry about it. I’ve had mine to the track multiple times and run it on the street a decent amount and have never had any issues other than the one rocker arm tip breaking but, to be fair, the rocker arms I had are notorious for issues.

What type of oil are you running? Mine gets significantly louder when I run synthetic. Maybe dump some zinc in to see if it quiets down.

I usually run the lash tighter than the cam makers suggest when hot. I'm old and have hearing problems from to much racing and shooting without ear protection realcrazy Which means that some noise that may irritate you I may not hear shruggy

I do not run Synthetic oil. I run Penrite 20/50 mineral, has lots of zinc.

I doubt it; Proforms are the rockers I had when the one broke. I had RAS bush an old set of Ductile Isky's for me which have been on the car a little over a year. There was really no change in noise between the two rockers.
