Can someone give me a paint code for Race Hemi orange in PPG enamel? Need to paint a 1963 engine and want to do it with a gun not a spray can.
Thanks for any help!!!!

Jeff the paint you want is simply refered to as "Race Hemi Orange" even though it was used prior to Hemi's being produced that's what it's known as today. It was used on all Max Wedges 1962-64, and all Race Hemi's, 1964-1968, as well as most 1966-1968 Street Hemi engines. If you are looking for OE correct mixes I'd refer you to Roger Gibson for paint you can spray with a paint gun. Other than that I don't know of any other accurate sources other than taking an original paint chip down and having it color matched. And just in case you have to answer a commonly asked question, the original paint had no metallics in it.

Scott, I seem to remember the Max Wedge motors were more yellow than the 66-68 Hemi's? Might just be what I have seen was not correct. I know you have good research on this subject.
I called Frank B. yesterday as you told me to but he was unsure as to what should be correct and told me to call Roger to make sure. Tried a few times to call him but have not got thru yet so I thought I would try here to see if anyone has a formula for this.
Don't really need OE correct. Just a 440 going in a 63 Polara. But I want it to look close to being right.
Anybody else?

Roger and Frank have had color matches done to original samples over the years. In thier marketing efforts they offer several shades according to which year engine that particular shade came from. They came up with Race hemi Orange, early Street Hemi Orange, and Later Street Hemi Orange.

Having said that based on the engines and original painted parts I've seen over the years I believe there were only two colors from the factory. I think what Frank & Roger were seeing were simply variables in mixes from one batch to the next or other environmental differences causing subtle shading differences.

My take on it is simply this: 1962-1968 = If it was a performance Mopar engine painted orange from the factory it was "Race Hemi Orange" (a pale Pumkin Orange color)

If it was a performance engine painted orange after 1968 it was Street Hemi Orange (the more familiar Reddish Orange)

So, if you order Frank & Rogers Race hemi Orange you should be in business, it's the best match I've seen for color and gloss.
