I hope this isn't a dumb question, but when repairing a trunk pan or any sheet metal for that matter, should you try to imitate the factory spot welds or just leave alone, ie. leave a smooth surface? Is this even advisable? If so, are there any good methods for duplicating a factory spot weld? Thanks.

I can't tell you wether you should or you shouldn't.But a good friend showed me a really cool way to do it.Use a paint marker while the primer is still tacky. He pulled the tip out of the marker and squished the end until it matched the size he wanted.
I was told to do a light wipe with body filler to hide the mig welds and use a pencil eracer Whats a paint marker that may be easyer?

A quality shop will do it using a Tig Welder. This is the inner fender for my Barrelcuda....
Alan not being funny but he his asking how to do it himself. Not pay some guy 20K to just weld a car out of 1 million small parts. And don't get me wrong your car is But not everyone has 20K to tos at just metal work. Most have cars that have 20 in the whole car

The actual bill for metal work on my car was $24k+ Please get your facts straight if you're going to take cheap pot shots..... A Tig welder for home use is a lot less..... If the person asking this question is capable of doing his/her own restoration then quite possibly they can purchase and use the tig welder. Some people don't like making bondo spot welds

Alan not talking cheap shots just pointing out not everyone has the big $$$ like you.
I don't have big $$$.....I borrowed every penny from the bank and I'm currently paying interest out the ying-yang like everybody else in North America
After I posted that I remebered that you got loans agaist the home. Hope ya make out goood on it and sell for enought to get yor $$$ back and make some cash for your trouble. I thought about doing just that with my car since it was my dream car{even a clone I just wanted a vert} But I have a home paid for, all cars paid for,and I owe Home Depot 4 bucks on the only credit card I have. maybe i should have hocked the home and had the car done by a pro since ya only go around once in life

What you can do is use a pencil eraser and push it in the primer. If your laying down 3 coats of a high build primer and do it a few times it will appear as if its there.
It looks good and is easy and inexpensive

Just curious....has anybody tried the Harbour Freight spot welder they have for something like $29.95? I really don't think I'd want to trust it for the actual weld, but would it "reproduce" the spot weld look if you hit the plug welds with this.
I can't imagine a $29.95 spot welder being "hot enough to melt anything? but at that price it's disposible... you could try it! I use a lenco spot here... they're under $1000 and have all sorts of attachments available. For the home resto, I'm with everyone else, primer and a pencil eraser... works great...
