I'm in the final prep process for trying this with my '63 Chevy pickup (using the 2/3 Rustoleum, 1/3 Penetrol path...we'll post pics as we go.) I figured if I was gonna put lipstick on this pig, I might as well do it right by taking off the trim. Since this is likely a weekend-only project, that means the truc's out of action for a month.
If you can let your project sit for that long, I think removing the trim is a better option. But folks who need to drive as they go don't have that luxury. Whichever you choose, just do as much prep work as possible and take your time. Far better to be a week late with a nice job than on time with a mess.
BTW, here's what I started with a year ago...wish me luck!

Hi! Everyone!! I just joined this forum today. As I'm reading about the roller painting skill, All I can say is WOW!!! so now I want to do that on my car too, but I have a few questions to ask: 1)If using a roller, isn't there will be rolling marks between each rolling area? How did you guys take care of that? 2)I noticed there should be at least 6 coats, so do I have to thinning the paint each time? Thanks guys

As long as the paint is nice and thin, there will be no roller marks. I think it also has to do with the fineness of the roller.
For my little test areas, I did it two ways- one was to thin each time, the other was to get a little sealed container that I mixed paint/min spirits into, then each time I added just a splash of mineral spirits to get it to the right consistency. I should start on my car in a few days, and I'll be using a small sealed container so I dont have to open the paint can each time..

I have started to paint a few parts of my 1970 GMC Pick-up and thought I would make a progress report. So far I have only worked on 1 fender, cowl and the grill. They all have 4 coats so far. The cowl and grill I sprayed with a HPLV gun on the first coat as a test and the paint sprays quite well.( color is Regal Red) the following coats are rolled/brushed. It is really going on nicely with no roller marks and only a few runs here and there. My biggest headache so far is dust. I wipe with a tack cloth, wear clean coveralls etc. I think the problem is because I am painting panels that are lying flat on a table and the dust is falling off me as I lean over with the roller. I included a pic of the grill, 4 coats before the next wet sanding.

wow that is a beautiful red. i purchased a color called "safety red" because that was all they had and i was in a rush to paint my car before spring break ended. it ended being a darker orange/red color. is regal red a stock color or did you get it mixed(or is it called tinting?) is it rustoleum professional or the regular kind? Thanks

Regal red is a stock color, regular rustoleum. I bought a pint to test, liked it, and bought 4 quarts at True Value Home center to paint my truck. My thought was to get a stock color in case I have to buy more in the future for repairs, etc.

That's after the first wetsanding when most of us rookies are ready to bail. then the third coat goes down and....presto!

Can you post up a pic of the "safety red" please? That's the color I was looking at using, it would be nice to see it applied and dried before deciding. Thanks,

Do you have any pics of the safety red? I was wondering how it looked compared to regal red..
