BTW, if someone hasn't sent this thread directly to Rustoleum, someone should. This is an OBVIOUS product application that they seem to have overlooked. They'll be selling the stuff forever if they'll just work with us cheap folks.

Clair

yea this is a great idea!! how could this be done. Send the whole thing so when they check there email they just start reading and reading and reading....it would blow them away!!!!!!

lets do this !!

Hi guys, My name's Matt and i'm from Melbourne, osstraylia. Just thought it might be time for me to weigh in with a few comments.

first of all, a thousand squeeling tyres to 69charger, for showing me a way to make my 1970 Valiant VIP paintable for an amount I can actually afford. Cheers dude you rock!

Just a quick question (first of many, dont you worry) for 69charger and admactanium. Seeing as I'm out all the way here in the land of Oz, where they don't MAKE rustoleum, what do you guys think about using any other sort of rust coating enamel? eg http://dulux.com.au/html/planning/product_range_metalshield.aspx

I mean, you crazy canadians are using Tremclad, you even crazier americans are using either Rustoleum or XO rust stuff, what should I be looking out for in terms of chemical makeup, or should I just buy a couple of small cans and start practice prepping?

If this works, I am going to be SOO FREAKIN HAPPY and everyone that is currently telling me that it is a bad idea will look like and when my goes and I'm like and

Thanks a million for the hard work kids, keep it up.

Peace

timelord

I don't know if this has been stickied before, but I feel it deserves one for a while.

HEy guys, how does bondo hold onto to this paint? I was bondo'ing a small area on my door when i accidently dropped a small piece as i was waking away and didnt realize it till today and trying to take it off is not even possible its like ROCK HARD and wont scrap off, i read somewhere on the net that when repairing RUST, they suggested to wire the rust down to metal then prime, paint rustoleum over it and then put bondo on top o.O Sounds wierd but it seems to not wanna lET GO off of my car so since my car is pretty much a ABUSE car i had small nickle dings here and there which i have applied bondo to and smoothed it out, and it doesnt wanna come off either, will post pics later.

Looks nice and dark Hopefully after wetsanding the reflection will be sharper. What grit are you going with, and what process have you used so far?

Well, Im not really a painter so Im a noob at this, but I did follow directions, wetsand after 2 coats, I kind of messed up a little bit, I applied the coats to heavy and now Im going to have to wetsand my ass off, I mean it dont look bad for the first try, of course it wont be as nice as the charger..lol but I cant complain, as for the grit, I have only used 600 grit, 2 coats and westand, havent gone to 1000 or finer yet, Im going to, Ill post some pics of it tomorrow after I westand again, some spots seem more glossy then other, dont know what thats all about, any tips from what you guys seen? It just has roller marks, i bet im going to be wetsanding my ass off for a few days..lol

hey guys great info I've been following this from the start and have also jumped in with both feet I LOVE IT !!
I'v gotten a hood scoop from summit and decided to paint it to match what I will paint the car. Here's what I've got. gloss white rustolium about 1/2 cup, small amount of penatrol(2-3 tablespoons to make it flow it also changes color so be carefull!!) and a 1/4 cup mineral spirits this will paint about 3 coats if I keep in a throwaway butter tub.
so far it looks good if I can keep from rubbing though the corners (white on black ) one problem that keeps happening is even after all the bubbles pop and the paint lays down and drys.
I come back the next day and there are little specks all over like poped bubbles or maybe pollen? anyway it sands out real easy with 800 grit in just minutes.
so far the paint drys out very hard if its not got a big drip in it. and really hard if I take it up to my shop attic while I'm gone to work for the day. It's got to be about 160* up there!!
keep the pictures comin I'll get one on as so as my wife shows me how

i was also wondering about bondo and if you have to take it down the bare metal or if you can just bondo over little imperfections right over the rustoleum?

I put it over rustoleum on very small Penny dents, well dimples, and it seems to not wanna come off, so i'm gonna paint it, i heard that bondo actually holds water and can cause rust if not primed / painted

I was linked over here from Thirdgen.org with hopes to paint my car on a strict budget. This looks awesome and despite what my friends are saying, I'm going to try this because clearly people are getting good results.

I have a 91 Camaro and it needs a lot of work. I'm going to be replacing the front and rear bumpers because of accidents. My big question is whether I should take off the quarter panels, bumpers, hood, ground effects, spoiler, etc. when I paint and do each part seperately. I figure this will help me to get a solid covering on each part but I don't know how others have faired. I saw the third gen camaro above with the ground effects off so I'm a little bit on edge about which path to take.

If it was me, Id just leave the parts on the car, just seems easier, but I mean if you want a perfect paintjob then take it off and get every little part, but you can always do one panel at a time with the parts on the car and make it look just as good. IMO of course.

Nice video! Apart from the few areas you had to bondo it's starting to look really good!

It reminded me of a tip I picked up somewhere on the net: If any of you are having problems with the paint not quite covering the last little bit at the edge of the rubber frames around the windows you can lift up the edge of the rubber and put a thin rope (3-4 mm?) underneath so you can paint under the rubber frame. When the paint is dry you pull out the rope and the rubber comes back and covers the edge of the paint.
Disclaimer: I haven't tried this personally, I just read it on a guys homepage. He always did it when he painted a car. Although he sprayed his cars, it should work when rolling it too.

ok dude we're in luck. the Metal Armour stuff from Tremco is apparently the real deal, so I'm going to head out and grab a litre and a bit of metal and give it a crack.

Awesome!!!!
