My 318 hesitates, stumbles and stalls when I stomp on the gas pedal. Operates fine at idle and once we are moving. Just rebuilt the carter 2 bbl hoping that a new accelerator pump plunger would completely solve the problem. Not! although it seems like the problem has improved somewhat. Also, Soaked the plunger in gas before reassembly. Should I be looking elsewhere now? Any input would certainly be appreciated

take a look down into the carb..

went you move the throttle does the acclerator pump squirt gas...might need to be adjusted.

also check your timing...

What he said when you just move the throttle there should be a shot of gas. If not make sure the check ball bearing is in the bottom under the plunger & take a screwdriver under the plunger leather cup & expand it outward a bit so that it snugly goes down into the AP bore.

Hello and thanks. It squirted gas only as the throttle was returning to its idle seat. So I adjusted the rod to hold the plunger all the way up and now it squirts gas when I kick open the throttle( the plunger moves down via spring). I think something is weird is this setup right? I am confused.I did adjust the timing and there was alot of improvement

hello it shoots some gas after about a 1/2 inch of throttle but is weak. Is the plunger supposed to travel up or down when it's shooting gas? Is the plunger supposed to sit up or down at idle? Check out the pic, carb is sitting at idle, does the plunger height look right?
