I saw an old article about a Drag Week participant who used one carb for the drive and swapped to a different one when got to the tracks. Any one else do this? That might have been me. Got old after a couple of years. I just run my Holley now.

I did that for a couple months...then I decided to tune the big carb properly.
Then I said screw it and went EFI...

I spent a few hours with a wideband, set screws, and stupid small drill bits and got mine lined out to where it did both well. It paid off in fuel mileage and drive ability while still retaining wide open performance.
You have to remember at drag week what seems simple has to be repeated over and over. Do you really want to remove your carb 10 times in a week?

I understand the concept, but it sounds like a PITA approach. I don't..................lol Well, this is coming from a guy who has... ummmm... a lot of carbs, and has no idea which is going to work the best when Divine Intervention finally occurs and my junk hits the pavement again.

Depending on the carb and combo, you might need to dial in the IFR, PVR and maybe T-slot restrictions, and the bleeds. get a notebook and a few afternoons.

I saw an old article about a Drag Week participant who used one carb for the drive and swapped to a different one when got to the tracks. Any one else do this? Do you remember if one carb was smaller, maybe for better drivability or fuel mileage, and the other one could perhaps have been a larger carb "set on kill" for the track? I'm kind of grasping for reasons why one properly-tuned carb wouldn't have worked across the board. In my case, I had two carbs that ran virtually identically on the track, but one was clearly more responsive and ran cleaner on the street. Wasn't a hard choice that time.

I knew a guy that would put a 2bbl on his car to drive to the track and around town but put a 4bbl on it to race(he put an adapter on the 4bbl intake to run the 2bbl

QJet. Business up front, party in the rear. Loved the quad for that. The Sound they made, was Awesome, when the Party in the rear started, Actually had one on my 69 Charger back in 76. After research they weren't as good overall performance wise as the Holleys. But they did come close with the right mods. EDIT, When I say Had one on my 69 Charger, I mean I Installed one on my 69 Charger. Got it.

The reason you'd want to do it is if you were running a drag week car on E85. Stations aren't always easy to find accross the country, so two carbs is an easy fix. Then you only have to bring enough E85 with you for the passes at the track. I can't find the magazine, and probably threw it out with a bunch of others. What I can remember is both carbs were Holley HP 4150s, but since I can't find the article I don't know if there was a better explanation for why the owner was switching carbs at the track. The other thing I remember is it was a white 70-ish Corvette w/ a big stroker BB Chevy. It was either a low 9 or high 8 sec car and the article showed pics of it hauling around its matching white trailer that carried all the spares. Oh, and that the car made it all the way to within a couple miles of the owner's home when it ate a roller lifter.
