Here's a quote I found from John_Kunkel on this site -------------------- The Hemi uses a 172 tooth flywheel while the 383/440 uses the 143 tooth flywheel; different diameters. Also the Hemi uses a didect drive starter while the 383/440 use the gear reduction starter; different mounting pad. ----------------------- It was from a discussion on the differences in bellhousings between Hemi's and B/RB motors. Apparently, the Hemi uses a unique 8-bolt 172 tooth flywheel, a unique bellhousing and unique starter. Besides the bell housing and 172 tooth flywheel, the tooth pitch is also different. I think some of the direct drive starters from other Mopars (industrial, early manual trans slant sixes) would work if the pinion gear is changed out to one with the correct pitch. Can't find an OEM Hemi starter? The easy solution is to go aftermarket. http://www.robbmcperformance.com/products/hemi_starter.html

It probably explains why the perfectly good original bellhousing was not in the car but came with it, and the car had a different one in it. Have to look at it and see what it is. The owner passed away and his brother couldn't tell me much about any of it. Thank you for the great response. Wolfe

Thank You! Wolfe.

Try finding a starter for a 64 300 with a manual in 1988. Nothing but gear reduction ones listed. Ended up having to get mine rebuilt.
They say there are no such thing as a stupid question. They say there is always the exception that proves the rule. Don't be the exception.
