My brother is offering me his 2004 grand Cherokee with a 4.7 engine. Problem is, it has a coolant leak and needs new head gaskets. Looks like a pretty big job. Reading these 4.7 motors seem to be pretty common problem. Anyone done this job ? Is it a good fix, ie or does it come back again ? Average cost to do the job yourself ? The jeep has 130k on it. wandering if worth my while to fix and put my kid in it. any advice or input thanks.

You may be able to put some head gaskets on and drive on but there is also the possibility for other related issues. If it's been hot, and likely has been since it's currently losing coolant, I would also be concerned about valve seat issues after the head gasket repair. They have a tendency to fall out and cause major engine damage. It's not one of mother mopar's best engines fwiw.

Second person who said that... Machine shop said he would touch the heads unless he installed new valve seats. Didn't want me coming back on him.Thx
