I think I have a two speed wiper motor ('71 SSP) but how do I tell? Trying to bench test it but I don't know which one I have.

Oh, OK, thanks guys.

I have the one on the bottom (3 speed) but the switch only has three positions. Far left is low, middle was stop and far right was high. I wonder if the switch was changed or ???

To clarify the wipers don't work well at all. Far left won't run the wipers unless you go to far right first to get them going, once they're going you can quickly change it to far left and they will work very slowly. Middle position stops everything but they will not park.

I'm guessing I must have a two speed switch? What are the positions on the three way switch? Far left off, one position right slow, next medium, far right fast?

Turns out I have a 3 speed wiper motor with a 2 speed switch. The car came with 3 speed wipers.

The only three speeds switches I can find are $290+. I may see if I can switch the car over to a 2 speed setup as I have extra wiper motors but I believe you need different linkage to do that. Still may be cheaper than buying a switch.

2 speeds switches are 2 clicks so 3 positions ... off, low, high

3 speeds switches are 3 clicks so 4 positions... off, low, mid, high

B body 71 switches are one year production, hence harder to find and expensive. Even more if Rallye cluster

72/74 are maybe easier and cheaper. Wiring is the same BUT NOT THE PLUG OR PRONGS DISPOSITION. You can try to get a 72/74 and try to find the plugs what shouldn't be hard to find at any JY. Rallye and Standard cluster, 2 or 3 speeds, all plugs are the same.

The diff between Rallye and Standard cluster is just the shaft lenght

71s got tipically variable speeds switches. No click on it aside the on/off one, but then a continuous sweep from low to high

Here you have!

This will work to you

https://www.ebay.com/itm/122374696104

It is as far I can tell really a variable speed switch. Will match your wiper motor since is the actual assembly on my 74.

I installed a 71 variable switch on my 74 which originally was 2 speds. Changed all the linkage, motor and switch. Got as a PRESENT a 71 variable switch on the Rallye cluster I bought ( also changed from standard to Rallye cluster ) and decided to use the 71 variable switch instead the 72/74 3 speeds I also got. Found the plastic plugs from a 71 Coronet donor and VOILA!

72/74 3 speeds... not variable speed available for these years

https://www.ebay.com/itm/112227136414

https://www.ebay.com/itm/122379770667

But will need to get the plug OR conect terminals individually on each prong

You can also get a standard cluster one and get the shaft and housing shortened. I did it once with a 72/74 2 speeds one with the one I had on my standard cluster before get completed all the parts to the wiper motor conversion

https://www.ebay.com/itm/122379770667

Need to be dissasembled and shortened at the inside end, not at the knob end.

Can't tell for sure how tricky is on a 71, but on 72/74s is fairly easy.

Can I use a variable wiper switch with a 2-speed motor? I have both a 2-speed switch and a variable switch (and also a 3-speed switch) for my '68 Barracuda which has a 2-speed motor. I can't run a 3-speed because of the 6-pack air cleaner, and I'm wondering what my switch options are.

Isn't the 2 speed a bigger disturb for a 6 pack air cleaner than a 3 speeds ?

Have you tried a prestolite 3 sp they are smaller than the 68 a-body 2 sp

Nacho, thanks for the education!!

I didn't know about the difference between the 3 speed switch and the variable switch. Like you mentioned mine must need the variable switch. I'll have to pickup a used switch and hope that it works because I can't see spending $300 for a NOS one!

I really appreciate you spending the time to help me with this!!

Variable speed switch works with "3 speeds motors", not 2 speeds motors. 2 speeds motors only works with 2 speeds switch.

I actually can't recall if 71s got 3 switches options ( 2, 3 and var speeds ) or 2 ( 2 and var speeds ). Is a fact since 72 just 2 and 3 speeds were optioned, not anymore variable.

Have to search on the 71 parts catalog.

Sometimes the 3 and var speeds are mixed up since both work with the 3 speeds motor.

My 74 parts catalog labels the 3 speeds switch like 3/var, but is not var, just 3 speeds. Dunno on 71. Will find out tomorrow.

Thank you, I guess I'll have some switches for sale! wrench

From what I remember (which goes back 13 years ago when I ordered everything for this project) the 3-speed motor winds up interfering with the air cleaner base unless you notch it. Right now I have around 3/4" clearance from the rear edge of air cleaner base to the front edge of the 2 speed wiper motor. Plenty of room for it to fit!

No, I already have a new 2 speed mounted to the firewall. I'd rather not drive this thing in the rain anyways drumhit
