Just opened new Indy aluminum block and it is the same as heads
They make TWO passes across the deck surface of the heads and blocks--OK if they were same level but they are usually off over .003 leaving a nice step or whatever you would call it--Funny on this new block they even MARKED it as you can see in the photo .0035 how sweet! Most machine shops on earth make one swipe and get these critical surfaces level--just basic" machine shop 101" I guess they would argue that you are going to deck it anyway why not? after spending all that loot you might as well right? I guess not so important on the block as you very well may deck it but on the heads --just does not make any sense to me. Come on KB get those blocks shipped!!! They are a coming Boys--they are!! Yahooo!!

I do have to say these look a lot better than they used to but if a machinist student turned that in he would flunk right?

All aluminum blocks I've seen have the sleeves proud.

Those decks would have to be done on a mill to have a step like that, a proper deck machine would be cutting across the whole surface.

They have (had) a monopoly on aftermarket aluminum BBM blocks, and people keep buying them, so why would they change it?

Unfortunately if Indy blocks were the only option left, I'd finally throw in the towel & move directly to a Gen III/SB 727 or a Chevy/Powerglide.

Is it just the sleeves that are high......if so, that's normal

X2

I'm pretty sure that the sleeves are supposed to be raised above deck for proper clamping to gasket. Just like O-ringing.

Nope not the sleeves it is hard to see in pix I guess--they make two swipes across heads they send out and now I see they do it on blocks as well
Top half of deck is one height and lower--( try and see the line about mid cylinder at edge of block) and they even marked it as you can see

I see the line. I wish the quality of their products was better. Then people wouldn't have to deal with the arrogant customer service.

Ill never understand how aftermarket blocks and heads are machined poorly and the customer just accepts that their machinist should just do it over again. Why not just do the freeking machining right on the first setup!? You gain *NOTHING* by doing the job wrong. Id loose my job if I machined like the automotive aftermarket does. What a bunch of flippin lazy hacks. Just leave it raw. Or work at a pet store.

Too small of a flycutter? I don't get why you'd do that? Using a shell mill instead of a flycutter maybe? S/F....Ken M

I agree that it SHOULD be even.........but if the sleeves are right, it really doesn't matter. Sleeves are left proud on an alum motor to seal the sleeve to the chamber. The deck is not as important

I've only used one Indy block myself.
When I talked to Russ about exactly what the block needed for machine work do be "done", one of the things he said needed to be done was that it would have to be decked.

The way it is in the OP's pic is what I would assume is what you get when you buy an unfinished block.

I had Indy do all the machining operations on the block I used.
I checked all the dimensions and they were all good.

All I did was thoroughly clean it and put it together....... No problems at all.

Don't get me started on Indy. My block needed a lot of work but I expected it because they are Indy. Luckily, I can do my own block work. For some people it's a big hassle. I don't even want to think back about all the problems. All I can tell you is I would rather wait a year for a KB than to have an Indy block shipped today.

Dart and every other vendor sends heads and blocks out flat Indy sends them with a step in the deck surface--OK on the block but what about heads done that way?? Really?
Up to ya'll but when the KB's hit life should get better fast

Not to defend but to clarify. If (underline) the deck surface is cut by Indy it is done in one pass as are the heads. They have one machine for blocks and one for heads and they both make the cut in one pass....but that's after sleeves are installed. The machine that cuts them just prior to the sleeves does not. I also know that they do not set the sleeves proud of the deck because well....Russel the love muscle.

Just hang on mopar world. It can only get better!
