4" cast crank (they're cheap these days). EQ mag heads with LA bolt pattern. this would give you an dynamite long block. I would get ahold of Eric Haugland of Las Vegas an importer of them, good guy to deal with.

Bang for buck is easy, put a simple plate system on it. No need for a 4" crank or heads or nothing fancy to reach your goal.

Anyone care to share there 340 build? I like to get 500 to 600 HP out of it. Its going into a 70 Cuda 4 speed with 3 55 gears What's the best bang for the buck? Start with a stroker kit for sure with that combo - just from a drivability aspect.
Fastest 300

I'm building a local customer a pump gas 340 stroker motor with a cast steel scat brand crankshaft, Scat I beam rods and SRP pistons with Eddy RPM 65 CC heads (10.2 to 10.6 to 1 comp. ratio)and a Eddy RPM Air gap intake. I'm hoping for and expecting 480 to 500 HP with the local 91 octane non ethanol pump swill at around 6200 RPM with either 830 or 850 CFM carb, I have both sizes in stock. I will dyno test and tune it on the local Studka brand engine dyno, it will go in a 1966 dart GT with a 4 speed also

You could build a nice 416 stroker for under $6000 if you don't use all the higher priced parts. I have a few hundred over $6K but I used the forged crank, H beam rods, Mahle pistons, custom cam and some other goodies. It runs great and has great street manners and has around 600HP.
416 stroker from Nick at Compu-flow. 11.14 in full street trim. Seems like a new best every time out. 11.06 open headers----so far!!

Untouched Eddie heads are a bottle neck on a 400+ cubic inch motor and will likely limit you to under 500HP. Add $1k for porting and retrofitting an older block for a roller cam will set you back $1500.
I wouldn't use cast internals to cut costs with your stated power goals either. Plan on spending $8000 then add another grand for incidentals.

I did up a mild set of E heads for a 408 last summer. Pump gas(I think it was 10.7cr), 265-270cfm heads, victor 340 intake(customer already had it), small solid roller, .600/.600 with 1.5 rockers,(customer didnt want a flat tappet cam, but did want 7000rpm capability)....... Made 540hp...... Don't remember the TQ exactly..... I seem to think it was 520-530tq. Don't know what the bill was, but I'm pretty sure it was over 6k(parts, machining, head work, assy, dyno).
500+hp from a pump gas 416 with eddy heads and a hyd roller isn't hard at all.........having it "all" done so all you have to do is write a check, and have it end up at under 6k.......that might be harder.
