Body shop is done with paint on my 1972 Charger and need flat/matte black paint for the bulge hood and louvered insert. Since nobody makes a hood stripe kit (only stencil) I want to paint it and the insert the correct style paint on the car. I believe the 1969-1972 hood matte is all the same type (though most are decals). Who makes the correct paint for that, or carries it in stock?

Were they originally done in organsol? That is what was used on most of the earlier hoods.

The black textured paint on old Mopars is called organisol. Original paint was lacquer. The modern equivalent is PPG DCC9355.

It's not easy to spray for the first timer so watch the following beforehand.

Agreed, a better substitute that I've found over the years is Mar-hyde, easy to spray, your technique can yield different results, but either way, much easier to care for later after application, depending on how much texture/pebble you apply in your spray technique, you can wax it later without fear of FUBARing it

I always use organisol, other ways will work but nothing beats the real thing. I used black epoxy first then a double coat of organisol and done. It doesn't like being spray in humid weather.

Thanks guys, will check those out. My painted is pretty good, so I'm sure he can do it. He's done a few mopars so it should be alright. Wonder if I should have him scuff the hood first for better application?

Do not wonder, it's an absolute must. Once you're past the open window of chemical bonding you have to create a mechanical bond by scuffing the area to be painted. You will not have to tell your painted to scuff, as I'm sure he'll know that.

Also heard totally auto reproduces the sami-flat/texture black. Has anyone tried their blend? It's always good to have several hooves when possible.

DDL9355/Organisol is black with a flattening agent in it, AND some silver...would be great if there's a compatible silver that could be added to Mar-Hyde - then you're 95% the way there to the real thing..

Dang, looks like some of this stuff is not avalible in California. Taking the day off Wednesday and see if I have other choices i can use for the paint. Will start another post then.

Planet Color (Sherwin Williams brand) has a textured black urethane paint as well.

Wish the OP would have shared what he went with as I too am doing a 1972 Rallye Charger hood black out and having issues with paint. So has anyone found a solution?

- I was goanna go "Cuda Cody's route (and appreciate all the effort) but PPG discontinued 2 of the 5 ingredients for his custom mixture so that's a dead end
- The mar Hyde I can only find in rattle cans...memh
- The Sherwin Williams looked promising but really looking it at seems WAY more texture than original
- Eastwood has a "Rat Rod' Satin black but comes in gallon cans...don't need that much

If it's just the middle part of the hood your doing a rattle can may be ok. Might be worth a can to test drive it on something to see if you like it, and can get it to lay down uniform with no lines or streaks.

The Sherwin Williams stuff I was not able to find locally as I wanted to buy a small can to see what it looks like years ago. The Sherwin Williams stores here just do house paint.

The white PPG 1999 paint texture additive appears to be a super fine sand or talcum powder like product. Might be able to get something like that from another source?

they used to sell SEM satin black paint in quarts so you can spray it with a paint gun instead of a spray bomb.

The original source was Totally Auto, but they stopped production as I ordered the last can in existence, so there was no point of putting them down. there have been other companies that have stepped up since.

OK guys I think I have the FINAL answer with all this, Summit UP312Q Black Satin. It gives the best color match and even has the right amount of texture to mimic Organisol about the best you're gonna do without spending gobs of time and money.

In case you care I also I tested an idea with a painted sheet topped with 1) Summit UP355Q Hot Rod Matte Black (left panel) Summit UP312Q Black Satin (right panel) and equal mixes of both for the center.I rolled it on (hence awful texture) let it cure and taped off the top 1/4 for "before/after" and wet sanded to 2000 and buffed to see if I could manipulate sheen, As you can see they all turned the same level of gloss. So I selected the Black satin with no buffing, and it turned out GREAT!

One note - Dave my paint guy said after he laid on the Satin and it began to cure it had gray blotchy patches, he was concerned but HAD to get the stencil off before it adhered so just hoped for the best...next day, all good!
