It's been a long time since I drove an A-body (and I've been gradually building this one for 19 years!), so I cannot remember if my '72 has a separate key to get into the car (doors/trunk) and ignition?

I'm going to need new door and trunk lock cylinders anyway, because I don't think they're in the pile of parts that came with the car. Well, I have two door lock cylinders (from different Darts) and no keys except the ignition... whistling

On all my stuff the ignition & door are keyed the same & the glove box & or console are keyed the same as the trunk.

A good locksmith can re-key your existing door locks to work with your ignition key.

Thanks smile

I found that Classic Industries (and probably others) sell a set of ignition + 2 door locks, all keyed the same. I was wondering about the trunk...

Trunk used a different key originally.

There is at least one kit out there that changes that though.

Thanks for the info. Hmm... what to do. Restoration Parts Source sells an ignition + 2 door lock set for a reasonable $38.45 shipped. I would bet it costs as much (if not more) to have my door locks re-keyed, and they'll still be 45 years old, too. work

Every mopar I (or our family) had came originaly came with two keys per set. The round head is for trunk and glovebox (if keyed) and the pentastar is ignition and door locks. Pentastar first appears around 1968 IIRC, definately by '72.

Whether an aftermarket will wear or fail quicker than your old one is tough one to answer! So much of the new stuff is not so good to start with, so it depends on whether its a good quality repop as well as how much wear is in the originals. ??????

My own observation has been that keys wear quicker than the mechanism. And of the mechanisms, the ignition seem to get sloppy before the doors or trunks.

Not much to the lock cylinders. Might want to pull one and look at it. The pin cuts might even be marked on it.

Yep, nothing to them. The pins or tumbler aren't marked but can be determined from each other when laid side by side. Try to drop the pins and tumblers out as a set 1 at a time. In most cases I can take the pins & tumblers out of 2 or 3 sets and get enough of an assortment to build a cylinder, they will work properly even if you have 3 sets instead of the 5 from the factory. Fortunately due to being cheap and broke at 16 I learned how to do it years ago before I figured out I should be scared of such stuff, tore up a few in the process but get it figured out.

As started ignition and doors are the same trunk separate but matches console and glove box locks if equipped. Trunk locks are missing in many cases so I buy new, they're only like $12. The trunk key and ignition key are actually different base keys in most cases and so the keys wont even side in slot of the other. twocents

That is one thing I always like about my Darts, you have to lock the door with the key, so it was impossible to lock your keys in your car! up
