I'm wanting to make the paint job on my daily driver look better and need some advice on how to do that.

Its an 06 Mustang in gloss black, looks great in the shade and at night and most of the time in the sun. However, when you look at it in the sun you see nothing but light swirl marks all over the doors, fenders, quarters, etc.

I know it needs a good buffing and polishing, so what would ya'll recommend I should do? Any and all insights would be greatly appreciated!!!!!!

Thanks guys

I used Mothers clay bar, and their polish and wax designed for use with an orbital buffer. I did my 01 Bullitt and the wifes Volvo and they came out great.

3m has a polishing system called perfect it. you have to use the right style sponge buffing pad kinda of costly but it will take care of the swirl marks. make sure the car is claen first, jeff

There's a product available at most autoparts stores called Nu-finish, it's in an orange container. It works surprisingly well for what you're describing. It's reasonably inexpensive, easy to apply, and last for quite a while.

There are also wipe-on type commercial products called "Swirl Removers" available at professional auto body supply stores.

All these products do is fill the microscoping swirls with product, causing the light not to reflect off them as much. It works much like when you car is wet.

They do not address the core problem though, and you have to keep re-applying them to maintain the effect.

I thought clay barring a car only removed debris thats on the top coat, will that help with the swirls? I planned on clay barring the car regardless, did wonders on my Duster.

Sounds like I need to use my variable speed buffer for this, definitely do that or ?

That's what I use. They (and others) have a superfine compound for black and other dark colors because the black/dark are the most difficult to get swirl free.

If you don't have polishing equipment Griot's Garage has a high quality hand polish that works on black.

I definitely second Perfect it by 3M. I used it year ago on a dark green car i had and it was simply awesome looking. Even better than a new paint job, however, I did mine under flourescent light (which shows the most swirl marks)and makes it the easiest to see to remove. Perfect it is not a super fast resolution, but if you take your time, let the Perfect it do it's job, your car will look great for several years with very minor maintanence thereafter.
