Broke an intake valve spring yesterday. Just cruising when it happened, retainer has some marks on it from hitting on the rocker arm. Rocker arm needs to be replaced. From the contact, there is a small amount of shavings that got into the head and possibly oil, but how bad I don't know. Doesn't see like much as there is only a small mark on rocker. Valve looks good, cleaned up metal shavings. I don't want to go cheap, but I really don't want to pull my engine if I do not have to. Any thoughts?

Mop it up and keep going if valve is ok and not bent
FWIW I don't know what springs you have but...Tool steel roller stuff never gives up any pressure but they Break--silicon springs give up a little pressure but almost never ever break I would look for interference somewhere as the cause many times folks check coil bind on outer spring but forget the inner which is in bind way more often
Never run tool steel on the street

Granted its hard to say for sure by looking at a pic on the net...... But...... That looks like a pretty meaty spring.
As in....... Maybe something a little more "race oriented" as opposed to an endurance spring with less pressure and a longer life.

Do you know what those are for springs and at what height they were set up at, along with the valve lift?

You now have major metallic debris in that motor from the edge of the head and the valve spring debris twocents scope
I would take the motor out of the car and disassembled it completely and clean every where you can like when assembling the motor the first time, cut the oil filter apart and inspect the oil pump thoroughly for damage from the metal debris washed down into the oil pan already up
BTW, are any of the lifters damaged or are you referring to the valve spring retainer and rocker arm damage? confused
