Hello again. My 70 Charger had a pitted windshield when I bought it in March of 2000. It sealed well and didn't leak a drop. A couple of years ago I had a new glass installed using a new gasket. The gasket was still technically new even though I bought it in 2003. It was in a sealed plastic bag. It fits the opening without any noticeable difference.
I didn't notice the leak right away. When I did I thought it may have leaked from the vent window. The car sits indoors and is not driven in the rain. The only time it sees water is when I wash it.
I took it back to the glass installer. He wiped a thin bead between the glass and gasket. It still leaks. Does anyone know the original procedure?
I had a serious leak in a 74 Duster after installing a windshield myself. I removed the glass and gasket and laid a bead of that gooey black urethane sealant all around the steel window channel then inside the channel where the glass fits in. The windshield never leaked after that. This was a messy process but is that what is necessary to ensure no leaks?

Your windshield shop did what I would do & what you did before....they just missed a spot...OR you've got a ton of flex in the body of your car

I think the factory just sealed between the gasket and the body. The b bodies only have a pinchweld for the gasket to wrap around on the top and sides, unlike most car that use four sides. The bottom of the gasket just sits in a depression in the cowl. This area for sure needs sealant. Sounds like the glass shop tried the easy fix first by unzipping the gasket and sealing between the windshield and gasket.

You should be able to see water tracks over the gasket if its leaking between the glass and rubber...

first thing is diagnose where and whats leaking

The newer windshields that have been produced for the past 15 years or so were a thinner glass which led to this problem as well. The better quality glass is a full thickness and does not have this issue.

The proper procedure for the 68-70 B body windshield install is: Apply a full 1/4" thick bead of window sealant (NOT SILICONE!) along the entire lower channel where the gasket sits, then apply a 1/4" bead from the lower corner of the A pillar opening up along the A pillar channel about 12" high on both A pillar channels, immediately install the gasket, and windshield, do not allow the sealant anytime to set up, start the windshield install at the bottom, work both sides up simultaneously into the gasket, then work each upper corner towards the center simultaneously. do not put any sealant in the gasket lip where the glass fits into

Hope your luck is better than mine, the "windshield" leak on my '70 Charger turned out to be a rusted through pin hole in the gutter below the windshield gasket. Dripped down onto the headlight door relay and filled it with water.

Before I had the new windshield put in, I cleaned the channel and found the metal to be in excellent shape. The original F8 shined like new.
I will probably end up removing the glass myself to eliminate the leak.

Dayclona is correct concerning new cars.. Most came unsealed between the glass and rubber gasket.

MOST WS's will leak there if not sealed after a replacement WS is installed...
Easy to look at the bottom gasket with a flashlight ( over the dash and usually in the corners) and see water tracks on the gasket... Pretty much tells if its leaking from there..

As also said above, leaks between the WS rubber gasket and the BODY or PINCHWELD are very common..

Get a friend with a hose and lay inside the car with a flashlight to pinpoint... Start the hose at the lowest point outside and move up from there.. DO NOT use any high pressure or a turn the hose on high.. All that is needed is to slight stream to find your leak source....

My "instructions" were for 68-70 B Bodies, every windshield I've ever removed or installed in a B Body (or any gasketed window for that matter) over the decades never had, nor used sealant inside the gasket bead to glass seal, including with the use of the newer so called "thinner" windshields on the market, one of which I have in my own Charger, and I do drive my car in the rain, ZERO leaks...

My experience has been different from yours.. Just saying that they do sometimes leak... If the OP has a leak he does need to make sure it is not from this area...

When I had the glass replaced on my 65 b, it leaked. The glass company ended up putting in some butyl rubber, the always gooey stuff, in the lower areas that are prone to leak issues. End of discussion on the leaks. At least there!. Butyl is what was generally installed from the factory along with the rubber gasket on the rope in style glass

The proper procedure for the 68-70 B body windshield install is: Apply a full 1/4" thick bead of window sealant (NOT SILICONE!) along the entire lower channel where the gasket sits, then apply a 1/4" bead from the lower corner of the A pillar opening up along the A pillar channel about 12" high on both A pillar channels, immediately install the gasket, and windshield, do not allow the sealant anytime to set up, start the windshield install at the bottom, work both sides up simultaneously into the gasket, then work each upper corner towards the center simultaneously. do not put any sealant in the gasket lip where the glass fits into

The "procedure" I listed above was actually instilled upon me many decades ago by my former boss when I worked the bodyshop trade, he was a former Chrysler assy line supervisor (for 20 years) back in the 60s-70s

Thats the way the FSM says to do it too !!! I photocopied that out of the manual for the guys when they did my Satellite . . . . arrghhhh, they didn't, it leaked, I went back, they siliconed the outside . . . I will be going back next spring - they will do it RIGHT !!!

If the shaft seals are leaking, they started dumping water the first time I washed the car after having the glass installed.
I like the idea of doing the leak test.

Mine were installed this way as well. 3 cars (Chargers).
Sealant along the bottom channel and 2/3rds up the pillar. Glass tech used urethane, not liquid butyl. He did squirt a little in the lower channel where the glass sits in the gasket as well, for good measure.

Not sure on A Bodies . . . you need to check the FSM . . . it is all there in black & white . . . 0n my car, the wiper seals were brand new - I installed them myself. I know it is the windshield that needs to be removed and installed, correctly !
