I'm interested in bigger brakes for my 80 D150, and google didn't help. Has anybody done it? I don't guess it's super important to stay with the 5x4.5 bc, I just thought it would be easier. Any homemade set ups or kits?

I know the 11x2 1/2" drums are easy rear upgrade, now I don't know how many options for discs front or rear.

How big a rim do you want?

I'm thinking 17" If I have to keep stock brakes I might just stick with 15".

I ran 11x2.5 on my 68A-body 8 3/4

I have both my 85 and 88-440 truck with the 11x2.5 but are 5 on 4.5

I order my parts up for a 73 Newport where I found the first set of drums/BP/hardware on a 8 3/4.

IIRC my 85 had the 5 on 5.5 9 1/4 with 11x2.5 as well.

I have seen a late 70s d150 9 1/4 with a set of 12" brakes but ordered with them. Plumber company truck.

or go disc brake with a FMS set up or a Dr Diff set up.

Since you indicate you may be flexible on the bolt pattern, I believe the 3/4 ton front rotors are about an inch larger in diameter. Swapping in a Dana 60 rear axle will give you a stronger axle. I'm not sure on the size of the rear brakes on the Dana 60 though.

If you do not need the stronger rear axle, the heavy duty factory stuff "Scratchin" mentioned may be sufficient.

I guess my biggest concern is up front. I've been reading about hydo boost and need to look closer into that too.

I am about to start working on a kit to put 13" rotors up front with 5X4.5 bolt pattern. I have most of the parts, but haven't had time to machine new hubs on my cnc lathe.

Here is my plan.

Machine 6061 aluminum front hubs that will use all the factory bearings, seals and dust cap.

Going to use 13" mustang cobra rotors. They will slide over studs like newer vehicles. Going to adapt chevy late model c1500 caliper and caliper brackets. These are PBR calipers just like the cobra caliper, but cheaper and larger pistons. PBR calipers are used on a lot of new vehicles. CCP uses this same caliper for a lot of their big brake kits. I went this way, because the rotors and calipers are easily to get local if you need quick replacements. I got rotors from Rock Auto for about $80 for the pair and the are drilled and slotted.

Hoping in several weeks I will have this set up on my truck for testing. I will probably sell just hubs and caliper adapters and you will provide the rest. I will provide year and part numbers for parts that you will need to provide.

Budget way is to just use some old rotors and chuck them on a lathe and machine all the rotor off until you just end up with a pair of hubs... then go from there. Making the caliper brackets isn't super hard in my opinion either (as mentioned in some of those threads)

Brembo calipers are easy to find now a days in take-offs (since so many modern cars have them OE now) and usually a good selection of brake pads too.

I just picked up a pair of 6 piston ones off a Porsche I'll use one of these days to build a big brake setup on a '68 Chevy C10 (with a SRT10 engine/trans) I am slowly building. laugh2

I am making hubs and offsetting hub/rotor surface so the wheel mounting surface will be in stock location. I have a tight wheel and fender clearance with my lowered truck. Also didn't want a lot of modified parts so if I eat a rotor, I can pick one up and use it as is with having to redrill ect.

I have seen a guy turn down the rotors on a big bolt pattern D150 and use newer Ram rotors and calipers over top of it with custom caliper adapters.

Thread for it on Pirate
http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/tow-rigs-trailers/1794090-dodge-2wd-big-brake-upgrade.html

I would think you could do a similar thing for small bolt pattern using Charger rotors for the smaller bolt pattern, but you would have to figure out your own adapter brackets to fit them.
