I don't think there is anything special about them. Just a captured star washer nut with coarse thread (in most cases). I found some at AC hardware.
They get painted. X2

sbcjd,
Here's a couple pictures of original trim ring nuts that I received from another Moparts member. The nuts are a very soft metal, and are a little thicker (taller) than nuts I’ve found at a general fastener supply store (Ace Hardware, Car Quest, AutoZone, etc.). Most over the counter nuts I’ve found today are thinner looking and zinc plated, as Scott mentioned. If you want the OE look, the only way to achieve that will be to find original nuts.
I’ve seen two types, one with an “S” stamped into it, and others that were plain. And, I’ve also seen them with good paint coverage, and minimal.

Rob is correct. Originals came with and without the S Also originals are slightly taller than anything else aftermarket that I have seen. Plus, the 6 edges are squared on top edges on originals unlike aftermarket. Original on right

If you have a reproduction trim ring the thread pitch is different than the originals.
I believe the original is 10/24 and the reproductions are 10/32. Not sure if I have that in the right order though.
You are correct.
