I took it out and it looks like a 6.5 inch round hole for a speaker.
I know I saw for 68 and up that they make a set of speakers so it is stereo ish.
do they do that for round instead?

can I just mount 2 two inch round speakers in there?
or some other choice?

You would be best served to search what Crutchfield has available. twocents
Component speakers are the best sounding but also cost the most. punkrocka
There are some great 6" and 6 1/2" round speakers available just make sure they're not a mid bass only.
I'd look at something 5 1/2"-6 1/2" round that is a 2 or 3 way speaker.

It all depends on if we are dealing with a factory radio or aftermarket as far as what impedance speaker you need , but S & M electrotech /turnswitch.com offers a good selection of speakers to fit most 1960's-mid 70's applications.
Just be sure if it is factory radio that you maintain 8 ohm impedance .

aftermarket.
just realized previous owner wired up the single speaker up front in the center hole.
thought I might find something in a pair that might fit.

For stereo from a single speaker location you need a "dual voice coil" speaker...it has the left channel and the right channel in a single cone. They come in all the common speaker sizes.

A "coaxial" speaker covers the full spectrum of sound - from bass to the high treble notes - so you want coaxial speakers or speaker. Also, automotive is most commonly 4 OHM, sometimes 2 OHM (my 2001 300M uses 2 OHM speakers, which are hard to find). Home stereo components are 8 OHM.

Look at speakers & all kinds of components at www.parts-express.com . I've bought a lot of stuff from them over the past few years.

In my convertible I bought a set of junk kick panels and molded in mounts for a set of quality component speakers, I used wood and routered them out for the speakers to fit in then used fleece and fiberglass resin to mould them in. After some sanding and a little paint they look like they belong there and sound great. I have two small speakers mounted to a sheet metal plate that fits the hole, it's sounds ok but your not going to get great sound out of it, all depends on how good you want it to sound.

I actually found this.

home wall mount speaker, but it seems to fit the mount almost perfectly.

Some over hang, so I will have to see if it will bolt up to the dash frame, or I might have to do some trimming.

It was already mentioned that home audio is typically 8 ohms. You run those speakers and you'll fry your head unit.

8 ohms is fine for aftermarket head units, it will pull 1/2 of the current of a 4 ohm. Even bridged it will be the = of a 4 ohm unit, assuming the head unit is bridgeable. A 2 ohm speaker would be bad, but those are usually only hi-end subwoofers.

yes it is aftermarket.
I have no idea if it is bridgeable.
If I recall right, I could parallel an 8 ohm resistor to each line and it would bring it down to 4 if it mattered.
I think it will just not be as loud as the rear if I just leave it alone.

I believe if you run 8 OHM speakers in a car it will just not be very loud. I don't think it will do any damage. Takes more power to drive the 8 OHM speaker & will not be as efficient.

I believe the 8Ω-4Ω dilemma is mostly a problem with old tube-type amplifiers, modern solid state amplifiers won' be damaged with wrong impedance speakers.

Not too sure that speaker is a stereo one, you need two inputs to have stereo, this speaker has one input (+ and -)

Don't be the exception.

Correcto...
But solid state amplifiers put out more power as the impedence decreases, power output in 4 Ohms is 2 x that @ 8 Ohms..

Just my $0.02... wink

I hope U didn't install those speakers..
Home speakers have little or no UV (ultra-violet) protection from the sun of their cone material, and will self-destruct in a very short time in an auto application...

Just my $0.02... wink

just a single speaker under the dash, so I think it will be fine.
