Guys, I have a one year only fuel tank that I cannot get any seals, rubbers, or sending unit, what is the best way to try and flush what is still in it and clear out the sender.

I know if I remove to clean, I will run into leaks and damage to the seals

I sent the tank in my '52 Plymouth to Gas Tank Renu in the 1990's and it's still holding up. No repro tanks for the '66's?? My '66 Sport Fury has been sitting for nearly 20 years and when you take the cap off it smells awful. I'll be watching this thread....

The Fury has been sold for a few years now, and it is still as nice as ever.

The tank I am referring to is in a 76 Volare, a one year only tank with no replacment parts available.

Thanks for trying to help though.

The sending unit seal/gasket is the same as earlier years. The filler neck seal is still available 4002010.

I've seen that sending unit but 76 and 77 tanks are seriously different, my understanding is that sender does not work on a 76 despite his ad.

I get conflicting opinions, on fitment but I will investigate into that part again. Thank you very much.

Where is the seal from?

Since it shows the seals etc are available I would highly suggest taking it out & getting it spot on clean. If it is real bad I would consider a new tank, (you're sure they ain't available anywhere?) As far as brands I've used Spectra from Canada several times. If I had to clean one out WO removing it I would hit it with the car wash wand then siphon out the sudsy water & repeat with clean water several times & siphon most of it out then a heater under it to evaporate the rest of the moisture. Just me if I could get a new tank I would as minute debris will cause havoc with carb systems no matter what filter you have

Not sure why you cannot retrofit the later, more common tank in?

Don't be the exception.

I don't think there is a good way to clean it in place. If it is not too bad, siphon out the fuel, add fresh, run a big fuel filter and change it often may get you by for a while but not a solution.

Once removed, I have had good results with the Eastwood 3 step system. Strong detergent, acid and acetone. Then the sealer.

There are a few shops that can sandblast the inside then apply sealer. That has worked well for me also.

Sealer without thorough surface prep is worse than nothing... it peels and plugs everything up.

A quick simple remedy is to pour a gallon of acetone in the empty tank and a few feet of chain. Slosh it around so the chain scours the inside.

I have a 77 volare. So I`m pretty familiar with them. The 76 and half way thru 77 uses a tank with a hump. The trunk floor pan is shaped the same way and putting a different year tank would take major surgery. With that said, the sending unit shown looks correct. The part number for the 76 early 77 sending unit is 3879683. Later 77 models went with a much larger opening for the sending unit. The sending unit gasket 76 and earlier will work. The filler neck seal is the same for 76 77 volares and up.

Is the sending unit bad? If not, I would use the old one. That is a aftermarket sending unit and won`t be as accurate.

Vans Auto had those same sending units for $75 at one time but I don`t know if they still have any left.

Having the replacment parts in my hand will give me more options when I pull and clean the tank, if the original stuff is useable I can choose from the two. The seals are on the bottom and side of the tank, looks extremely subceptible to leaking.

Not looking forward to this job.

If you end up only needing the gasket, http://www.rtspecialties.net/proddetail.asp?prod=1948757 Then again, i`m not sure if that is NOS but that is the correct part number.
The sending unit is at the front lower part of the tank and the tank needs to be empty when removing the sending unit. It won`t be a issue for you since you are removing the tank as a assembly I assume. Do not use the aftermarket lock ring. They are flimsy at best and will cause issues. At me how I know, LOL. Use the old one if it`s in good shape or look for NOS. I believe the filler tube seal was still available from dodge last time I checked. I actually used a NOS sending unit seal because the aftermarket was a different rubber from OE and I didn`t trust it after the first mishap.

RapidRobert, that tank is not available anywhere. I emailed the vendors asking about them and they pretty much laughed at me. The mopar number is 4002333 and they are pretty much nowhere to be found.

I am going to use either the berrymans 1 gallon cans of carb cleaner and fill the tank with that or methylene chloride, that should remove the varnish and sludge...
