I have a Saginaw power steering pump with cooler from a 70 Road Runner that hasn't been used in many years. I also have a power steering gear box from a 69 Dart that was last ran about four years ago. I would like to use them both on my current project. Do you think they would actually need a full rebuild or could I possibly just install new gaskets/seals? I know I can buy a refurbished pump and box from a parts store but if I can freshen up what I have myself and save some money I would prefer to do so.

Saginaw PS pumps are very simple to do a top grade DIY overhaul on.

That's good to know. Are any special tools needed? Have you ever done a power steering gear box?

If you choose to replace the support bushing that the shaft rides in then a press becomes necessary, otherwise no.

Steering boxes are more exotic but the two seals for the input & output shafts can be done by any competent shade tree wrencher.

Some saginaw pumps have a press on pulley and require a special tool to remove and install. The tool is not very expensive and can usually be found at parts store. The rebuild kits are cheap and they are a breeze to install. I do recommend replacing the front bushing. Most failures are simply worn bushing and the seal leaks.

I've had issues rebuilding power steering pumps where the input shaft becomes scored or worn from the front seal. You can try to polish the shaft to improve sealing. If it's badly worn it will probably continue to leak even with a new seal. I wonder if there is a speed sleeve available to salvage a worn shaft?

Just an FYI. Looks like kits are available to sleeve a pump shaft if you measure the diameter. Here's an example......didn't particularly check on the specific Saginaw pump you mentioned.
