I am working on gathering parts for my 4wd conversation 1 ton. What I'm curious about is what parts would you choose to pick up for this? As far as what t case would you use and why. Is there any reasoning to put the longer Chevy springs in it or should I use the factory dodge ones I have? Pretty much if you would you would do it what parts would you choose and what's the reasoning?

Currently have a Dana 70 for the rear. Dana 44 up front for now. No drivetrain yet. Truck will be a daily driver/ weekend cruiser.

What year? I am going to assume 72-93? Part selection really all depends on what you are doing with it and what the desired finished product is (38.5" tires, 8" lift etc etc)

The NP 205 is the strongest transfer case you could get in an oem. You do lose some usability, no shift on the fly etc.

A dana 60 front is nice, but if you aren't running over 35's,beating on it with some massive horsepower or putting a cummins over it the 44's are just fine.

If you plan on doing a ton of work, new shackles and hangers etc there is more of a selection with chevy springs, and the flexing guys definitely get more movement out of them. But for something basic I would stick with the Dodges.

It's just gonna be a daily driver and weekend cruiser and tow truck. Not intentions ok getting into the off-roading world. Only converting to 4wd because we get a little bit of snow and never been a fan of 2wd duallys in the snow. So I don't really want to loose the shift on the fly 4wd. I am staying with a gas motor. Unsure if I'm gonna build a big block or find a 360 for it yet. It's going in a 79 chassis I believe. How about using the drivetrain from a late 90s dodge and using a 241 t case?

Since its a dually, will you be towing a lot of weight? I would find a dana 60 then.

The problem with the late 90's 241 is it is a drivers side drop, the 93 and older were passenger side. You would need a matching front differential.

The late 90's front diffs are usually cheap and plentiful BUT they used the coil over suspension. I suspect they could be converted to leafs but am not sure of the process and how much work it would be. Passenger side should be easy but the flat on the drivers should be part of the housing, I am not sure where the spring perch would land in relation to the center section. Some quick measuring should be easy enough. You would also need to hook up a vacuum switch for 4wd, not that hard though.

the np205 has been the gold standard for a long time because it is all gears--no chains----however the 241 is twice as strong as the 205--the dodge 241 is a driver drop---the chevy 241 is a passenger drop--i have heard you can adapt the chevy 241 for use behind a cummins automatic in a conversion--so it looks possible....as far as shift on the fly--whats wrong with just locking in your hubs and shifting the transfer case where you want it--on the fly---
