Ok so I find an ad on craigslist that a guy is selling a 440 engine for $600 and it's in a crate. Seems like a good deal and head down and pick it up. He Tells me the engine has only 5k miles on it (1966 date) since rebuilt and was pulled since he found the correct date engine for his car, then built a wooden crate for it and put it away about 6 years ago. I get it home and decide I don't want the six pack edelbrock intake for it (I'm using an RPM intake) and decide to pull it. After I get the intake off, I'm looking down at the Edelbrock RPM heads and see they were gasket matched, but the runner have black soot in them? I turn over the intake and it has black soot in those too. Could there have constant backfire enough to cause engine problems, or is there no need for concerns?

Reversion. My 440 had some issues (factory 383 exhaust manifolds and bad lash settings) after a full rebuild and even my carb was totally black from soot.

Personally I would not be too worried about it as long as you set up everything correctly.

(1) how much cash would it take to take the 6 pak intake off your hands? (2) yes reversion (if real rich it might could use reringing/dingle hone)

Yeah, the guy had a warehouse full of stuff from when he was selling/restoring Mopar muscle cars up until 10 years ago. It took me 4 trips to clean him out, and he only sold me 1/4 of what he had. His friend bought 3 440-6 assemblies, 6 Airgrabber hoods and enough stuff to fill 6 full swapmeet spots at spring fling!

Ok, good to know there might be no problem with the engine. Looking to put that in my 1970 Cuda since Magnum Force sponsoring part of my and got me hooked up with their Transformer front suspension for it.

Sorry, The intake is already spoken for, but it's going to the guy I hooked with an A12 car I found last year.

Probably the reversion means the engine has a pretty big cam in it with a lot of overlap. IMHO nothing to worry about.
