I have a 318 with an automatic 727 tranny. It has a big block k member, and 8 1/4 rear end 2.73 gears. I was wondering what all would be needed for a swap all the parts that would be needed, if you have any prices or info, brakes change ?, I was thinking about purchasing a 440 and a big block 727 transmission but just need help with all the other things I need. Let me know, also if you have maybe a instruction guide to installing everything let me know. Thanks, I am on a limited budget but if anyone has a list of everything that would be great.

your gunna need to get rid of that 8 1/4.
do you have collomn shift or console?the headers effect the linkage of a collumn shift i believe.

The 8.25 will physically work but not survive long, but you can swap the motor in and deal with that when the time comes.

If you've got the big block K-frame all you'll need is the motor, trans and the stock BB motor mounts. Also a 904 is shorter than a 727, so you'll need your driveshaft shortened. Brakes and torsion bars will be fine, but an upgrade would not be a bad idea. Rad may or may not be up to the task, I cooled a 440 on a 318 rad for a few years but it did not do good at keeping temps under control when it got hot outside. I eventually replaced it with an aftermarket aluminum rad. Other than that it's pretty straight forward. Gear shift linkage is the same between the 904 and 727, and no wiring changes other than a couple wires for things under the hood need to be shortened or lengthened, ie alternator/distributor wires, temp sensor, etc.

It's pretty straight forward. You would need the big block mount brackets and all the acc brackets. The wiring from the dist would need to be lengthened. Change to big block exhuast manifolds or headers. I'm guessing the lower rad hose is on the pass side. You can either get a pass side water pump housing for the 440 or a radiator W/ the lower hose on the drivers side. I'm not sure but guessing you would need a different throttle cable and kickdown.

You'll need
-some exhaust manifolds that will work with that body style(or headers)
-Modify current exhaust to fit above manifold, or headers(likely a job for an exhaust shop)
-motor mount brackets
-If you keep the 8 1/4 for a while (which is OK if your 440 isn't built up) then you can use the driveshaft you have, Then upgrade the rear diff later.
-You'll have to lengthen a few wires under the hood (like temp, and dist PU) when you do the install
-Depending on year of 440 you get the radiator outlets may be wrong on the rad, and the rad will likely be too small anyway.

That said, once you have the 440, see which side the outlets are on, then go looking at the wrecker for a rad that matches, from a C body or a truck.

Later 440's had the WP outlet on the same side as the later trucks etc, while the earlier ones were on the opposite side.

Oh...and the stuff they mentioned that I missed,(they responded whil;e I was typing )
