Hi guys... crazy day.

I posted about some material in my oil filter...
https://board.moparts.org/ubbthreads/ubbt...tml#Post2171150

So a friend tossed me a new filter today and I popped it one, 20 minutes run time pretty good.

Cut open filter and some more of the same thin flexible material, so its down to the short block and i will have it fully apart tonight with pics.

I had a thought in the post in the link above that it might be the wiseco skirt coating as in the past I had a set of piston that it wanted to come off for what seemed like no reason.

Sure enough I can see past the cam to see a small bit on the skirts missing but zero scuffs in the skirts, just as in a prior build with the same pn slugs.

They say they can go as tight as .004 at build time I was at .0055 and Ive always made dame sure the lower bore was not sharp.....

I had run this on my test stand as I planned on doing an inspection due to my unconventional top end and im happy to report on that all looked good with the exception of I found out cometics wont seal around the oil hole on the 10th use as I seen it pushed some oil out into gasket area.

So what do you think is jacking the skirt coating on my wiseco pistons?

Ive alot of pics and questions I will post tonight as well as I will remeasure my skirt to bore at the bottom for like the 5th time.

Better catch it now then later and I think maybe the little bit in the filter was less then before and it might of been ok...

Ha, got me I did edit that.

They are wiseco K0011B60 2618 pistons that they say can go .004 on tight.

I got it on the stand, but got to take a break and suck some 02.

Then back at it, I want to see [ Moparts Family Site - Keep it Friendly ] is going on here.

It spins great, the bores look good, I hope this isnt too bad.

Is that the "Grafal" coating on the Wisecos?

I edited this because I went out this am and took a few more pistons out, ive got .0055 on 7 out of 8 and one a hair less then .0055.

The spec card says they can go .0035.

I can flake off there armor coating with my finger nail in good sized pieces.

In the pics you can see the grooves from the piston skit thats like new.

The coating just isnt sticking?

Any ideas?

Nothing said here will "fix" the problem if indeed the coating is that easy to flake off. Your ONLY recourse is to call Wiseco and see what they are willing to do about it if anything

Yup, I'd call wiseco and get their take on it .

Worse case scenario.......if that's the only thing you find...... Just remove the coating and put it back together.

Actually I just got off the phone with wiseco, with the number off my piston sheet he said they had a issue of the cleaning process prior to some coatings and are going to cover shipping and the recoat of the skirts.

Not really happy over the mess, but im glad I caught it and semi pleased they were quick to address the problem.

Now after all that fuss, I got to ask myself is it worth the downtime and hastle vs just cleaning the junk off and running them.

Id like to get this thing in the car and some runs before the snow hits.

It's your call, remove and run and send them back later or remove and run and forget about it shruggy
If you remove the coating how much more piston to cylinder wall clearances will you end up with? work

Im gonna go clean one and see where im at on clearance and go from there.

Im just really glad to have an answer as to why it came off, I had a good little bit on the bottom of the pickup as well.

Id say 1/3 of the coating came off each skirt in less the 1 hour run time on the test stand.

I would clean the hell out of the block. Take the oil pump apart and the oil galley plugs out and visually check all the feed holes. That stuff in flake form can't lube a bearing

I`ve heard of the coating rubbing off eventually and ending up in the oiling system but is no problem because it mixes fine w/the oil.......... work Unless the coating took up that much clearance, I`d run it a bit more and change the filter again and beat on it........

The coating is never permanent, just should wear WAY more gradually than flakes.

Flakes, thats an understatement.

My filter had small pieces, the motor is full of flakes. The pickup had a bunch the size of a pinch of tobacco.

So yea, im gonna gut, even pull the cam bearings and just make sure its right.

I removed the coating for one piston and id hit spots where little areas just popped off, the rest I rubbed off with 1500 steel wool in soapy water.

I didnt give up much skirt to wall clearance.

Hey, but ya know what I dont see in the filter pic, trash and metal... I think it would of been a full on go if not for this issue.

Alot came off each piston, but cleaned up ok.

Not pretty, but...

One of my best service life builds was a simple $1800 Eagle/SRP forged kit, Ive had a bit of trouble with scat and this $2600 K1/Wiseco Kit...Grrrrr.

The only scratches are a few light ones from me removing the rest of the coating.

Want them coated correctly? This is the place. Nobody complains because they do an excellent job.
