So you guys are using mineral sprits?

When I sprayed rustolem last summer, I thought it said to thin it with asatone (sp?)...

Is it different if you roll it vs. spraying? Or is mineral sprits better for this process?

Or am I just

RAR II

i've tried varsol, laquer thinner, but not acetone, i found mineral spirits work the best, i would think that acetone would "flash" the paint too quickly. mineral spirits seems to be the best and has alot of other uses like cleaning carbs, taking off overspray ect....

Does it work OK to mix up a batch of this mineral spirits and paint and then store it in a jar? So far I've been mixing each time to get the mixture right but I think I'll stick with 10-15% and put it in a jar if that would work, so I can have more consistent batches.

yes, thats fine, but u may have to add a bit more thinner like 2% when u use it next.

I was told to do this on my 46 ford frame by an "old timer". I already have a gallon of black. I think I'll try it on my 54 chevrolet truck fenders. It's a truck you know so I don't care how that much how it turns out.

Question?

Can you go right over the paint after some sanding and prep or do you need to go to metal and "bondo"?

Here is an Excel spreadsheet to calculate how much spirits to add for whatever % you want to end up with.

Hopefully we can learn what works best..

I know that you mentioned having the paint tinted at the store, but what about mixing stock colors? For example, mixing some "Sunburst Yellow" with "Grass Green." (see http://www.rustoleum.com/product.asp?frm_product_id=18&SBL=1) Does this paint mix well, or do you think the different colors will stay separated in the mix?

exit1965 - nice pics, as you can see it only gets better. i would have tested on a larger pannel, it's hard to just do a small area and take it thru the whole process, wait till you've got 6 coats on it and after the final wetsand and polish, you'll be very happy.

Thanks 69charger.

I wish I would have used a bigger test space also. to the left of the test area is what I used for practicing welding trim holes shut, so it's got lots of grinding needed if I want to use that area, but I just might to do more testing.

One thing I'd like to know is how you clean your roller after use? I have been washing it out with mineral spirits and water then using a paper towel to dry it, but I think some of the fibers from the paper towel are sticking to the roller and coming off in the paint! I'm not sure the best way to clean it off.

Oh well at least I'm figuring this out now without doing an actual car.

well if i'm using the roller again that day i put it in a plastic bag, take all the air out and load up the roller before i put it in the plastic bag, otherwise i just throw it out and use a new one if i'm painting the next day, they are only about $5 for 5 of them. oh and DON'T use water!!!

Phew this thread got cold fast! I should probably have been done with all steps by now but life got in the way the last 2 days, so I just now have put the 4th coat on and now the color is completely covering what was under it. It's looking much more orange peely than previous coats but I'm not too worried since the next step is wetsanding, then 2 more coats, wetsanding and then polishing.

Hopefully by Sunday I'll have a final result, then I'll put the door outside and see how well it holds up..

ya i guess all of a sudden it was read by just about everyone!!! like a new girlfriend the excitment has gone.....
regarding your door expirement, there is something your doing wrong, i get virtually NO orange peal. maybe too thick? i dunno, the wetsanding just makes it perfect, i wetsand the whole car in 2 hours, so that should give you a good indication of how much orange peel there really is.

Wicked thread.
Very interesting. I think your onto something.

I prefer the #10 broom finish. That's the only way I can get it to look ,anytime I paint something.
