Hey guys with Dusters, what size wheels and with what backspacing work good on the front? I've serched and found lots of info or rear but not fronts. I have a 72 Duster all drums that I'm converting to 73 disk brakes with big bolt patern and need to know what some wheel and tire options are.

The rims I'm looking at are available in 15x7 with a 4" backspace and 15x5 with a 3.5" backspace. Will the 15x7's fit? What are you guys running as far as wheels and tires? I plan on a 28" tall rear tire so I'm thinking a 25-26" tall front would be good, and the wider the better for better handling.

I bought the car with 17x8 torq thrust 2's on the rear, I might try those up front and get wider 17's for the rear(springs moved and soon minitubbed), but I think I'm leaning towards 15x10's in the rear and 15x7's front(if they fit). I'm thinking either Weld prostars or the Summit look a likes, or the newer Greg Weld Dragstars. Anyone have any of these, got pictures? Thanks

Butch

I have 15x7 with 4 1/8 backspace and 225/60R15's. they're pretty tight and i'd ideally have used a bit more backspacing (like 4.5) but they fit and don't rub.

What rear/axle/brake setup are you running in back? I have an a-body 8-3/4 rear with B-body drums and backingplates which sit out a little farther than the original a-body drums did so I was able to mount 15X8 rims with 4.5" backspacing and 275/60/15s with 2" lift rear springs.

I suspect you might have tire to fender contact issues with those rear wheels moved front, but its free to try so I'd give it a shot.

Thanks for the info so far, GoldDuster318, so if youhad 4" backspacing do you think those 15x7's would stick out too far?

DirectSubjection, right now its got an 8 1/4 out of an F-body with 17x8" rims with 5.5" BS. But I just got a hold of a narrowed 8 3/4 with a 4.88 sure grip(yikes, I'll change that later), its an A-body rear shortened 2" on each side(4" total) so its about 53"s drum to drum. But with the springs moved and if I mini-tub it this spring I can run a 15x10 with 4.5-5.5 backspacing and a 325/50-15 or 28x12.5.

I have seen a few Dusters with 17x8's up front so they might fit, so I was originally thinking about running those up front and some 17x9.5-11 in the rear, but it rearlly limits my tire choices, I really want a 27-28" tire in the rear to fill it up. So now I'm debating between the 17's, or selling the 17" rears and going 15s all around.

You can also relocate the fender brace hole pushing the fender out slightly to help with wider rims/tires.

If 72's have the fender brace???

I did this on my 74 Duster 360 many many moons ago.

It will be kinda close, but if you use a skinnier tire (215) you'd probably be able to get away with it.

Here are some more pictures:

Thanks for the pics goldduster Yeah looks like less backspacing might be tight.

Hey Kudakid, any idea what the backspacing is on those 15x7s?

Both the Summit prostars and the Greg Weld Draglites only come in a 15x7 with a 4"BS, so if its gonna be too tight I'll have to go with the 15x5's or spend the extra money and finds for real Weld Prostars, seems like they have more sizes than the cheaper rims.

On my '74 Duster I put 235/60R15s on 15x7s, 4.25BS front and 27/60R15s on 15x8s, 4.5 BS rear. Had to trim the bottom front corners of the front fenders a bit, and move the rearend back 1/4" using a 1-piece shim I made for the front spring hangers.
Worked fine, improved the handling a bunch. Stock springs & ride height, though I did drop the nose a little. I don't think I could put any more tire on the car given the height I was looking for; really changed the look & filled the wheelwells.
Be sure to check tire interference with the wheels turned and at different heights so you don't crash the tire into the fenders entering driveways & such.

Thanks . Hows the fit, do they stick out at all? Looks good in the picture. Any rubbing? If thats the case I should be able to get away with a 15x7 with 4"BS and a 215 tire. Thanks again for the info!!!

Butch, no problems whatsoever. Just don't go with a tire larger than I stated above.

Thanks!!!! Summit wheels are 10% off till April 30th as per the new catalog, so I may be going with the 15x7's with 4" BS and a 205 tire, and a 15x10 for the rear. Unless I can find a good deal on some used Welds, $90 for the 15x7's and $117 for the 15x10's sounds like a good deal to get some nice looking rims.
