has any body put a mid 70s to late 80s 318 in a 55 dodge - Plymouth car with out the front clip change? if so what engine mounts did you use? I have had a hard time finding the steel mounts for a 318 truck . I think this is a way to go. just a thought , so where can I find steel mounts for a 70s 318 truck , then buy the rubber mounts to finish it off. thanks mike mhutch1948

There are a variety of mounts available, both oem and aftermarket. Here are two that I make for the EarlyHemi that can be used for other A, LA and even early Cadillac engines:

What ever you do, you will probably have to add brackets on the frame to attach to the mounts on the motor.

By the 55/56/57, you could buy a Dodge or a Plymouth with a V8. Those original parts may still be available, but how well they will attach to your mid 80s motor might be a good question.

I've not dealt with a 55 dodge car, 50, 54, and 55 Dodge trucks, but they have a different frame then the cars do. Does you car have a transmission mount at the rear of the transmission? Trucks do not.

Also, what are your plans for a transmission for the 318? The original trans would have had an emergency brake drum on the end of the trans. You will loose that, and you will probably want/need to update the rear axle as well.

If I were doing it, I'd use the later spool mounts (won't pull apart under torque) and fabricate frame brackets to accept them.

Nice, but a little pricey.

Guess they don't know that the 273/318 driver's side ears are wider apart than the 340/360, unless they expect you to fab up a spacer but they make no mention of that.

Not much insulation with those Tinman ones, but nice having them available.

That's why I went with stock motor mounts. Figured there would be enough vibration coming from "other areas" and wasn't concerned about ripping one apart with 300 - 350 HP level my motor would be making. My focus on my build was "driver friendly".

hey crizila; your set-up (very nice, great pics) is what I am thinking for my dodge car. cant seem to find that style of motor mount. I can use the spools on my current motor, and I can cut the mounts off the k-member from the 5th ave but the other way seems easier to me. I understand that I may have to move the 318 to the right 1-1 1/2in for manifold clearance.i plan on using the 904 trans and mybe the rearend also. thank you; mike

Don't know what you want to use for ex. manifolds, but I went with block hugger headers and had plenty of room to put my motor centered in the frame rails. Bigger issue might be the steering gear box / steering shaft. A rack eliminated the gear box clearance issue, so I just had to contend with the steering shaft. Cleared the headers bay about 1" - passing through the left motor mount. Make sure you have clearance with the steering system before you start welding up the mounts. My engine mount bolt holes are slotted so I can make minor side to side engine levelling adjusting if necessary.
